Howdy, some of you may remember my last post regarding how to make a head gasket....
I'm having a real hard time finding "aluminum" paint.... I have found rattle can high temp paint with some aluminum in it... and people trying to sell me aluminum colored paint....
Yikes!!! For those who replied... Could you please piont me in the right direction... I know I'm looking for a quart, but brands, names, or normal uses for the paint would be great!!!
Thanks again,
Adam

Did you ever get a head gasket made? I made one years ago to get my snowmobile home from the hills. Made it out of a Cheerios cereal box. Worked fine. I just went looking for a gasket vendor and about fell off my horse at the prices! Gonna make my own. Jim

Adam - Copper Coat mentioned by Mark is good stuff. If you are going to make or have made a new gasket for that engine then use that to coat the gasket when reassembling. I would definately use it in preference to "Aluminum" rattle-can spray paint. However, if you are going to try to reuse the old gasket as you mentioned in your origional post then first try to find the regular old-fashioned Aluminum paint and use the fines from the bottom of the can. The reason being -- the "fines" that are in the old style brush paint are coarser and do a better job of filling the imperfections in the surfaces of the gasket, head, and block. The spray on products don't apply the same quantity or thickness of metal fines as you get by brushing on. (the "brush-on" fines couldn't even pass through the spray nozzle to start with). That said, if your head and block surfaces are in decent condition and you don't try to re-use your old gasket then use copper coat on the new one. The liquid carrier used in that product will handle the engine heat better than the carrier provided in regular spray paint. Like Mark sez, he's been mechanic'n for over forty years, and I've been mechanic'n for over fifty-five years and am still doin' it so you can pretty well figure our suggestions are not going to hurt your engine.

Adam..... ..not quite certain why? you think you need a quart of alumimum paint for your home-brew headgasket.

Most people that use aluminum paint to "seal" their headgasket, just use a spraycan to do it and apply while paint is still wet. There is also a "copper-coat" spraycan gasket sealant too. Your call..... ....Dell

Tim, I happen to be working on a reletivly rare engine... It's not like I can go to my local parts dealership and order a head gasket... I have many engines, and am pretty good about finding hard to find parts... Be thankful you can still get parts for the "N".... This engine is a small two cylinder 5 1/2 horse power from the thirties... With the exeption of the magneto, everything has to be hand made. If I need a handle, I will have to cast one, if I need a gasket for the carb, I make one.... If I noticed you needed a head gasket for a Tucker, should I suggest NAPA???
No dis-respect, just some insight...

Dell, I should have known you would know where to find a head gasket for a Tucker!!!! I was just trying to make a point to the guy, as it was sounding like he thought I could just pick up my head gaskets off the net or at a parts house... Sure I might be able to,,, but it would be after a lot of patience!!!!!

Copper Coat or Kopper Koat (not at home so don't remember how they lable the can) which I think is mfg. by K&B, is purely excellent. It has the copper for heat transfer and an adhesive which keeps your gasket from squirming when trying to install the head or other things when used for other things.

Contrary to mfgr's specs "put the gasket on dry".....I'll spray some CC on it every time (including water stuff, and grease stuff, and oil stuff....all stuff) and after 40 years of mechanic'n I wouldn't do it any other way.....never a call back.

I like the spray, but clean the nozzle (Berryman's chem tool works great) after use. Just remove it from the can, cleanout backwards and presto...ready to sit on the shelf for 6 months awaiting the next job.

Dell, from what I gathered, it would be easier to find a quart, and by it not being in a can, I could scoop, and spread the aluminum on the copper head gasket. I need to home brew one, as I am working on a really old and rare engine. (Standard Twin)
Thanks
