rusty starter rebuild question

Recently replaced my starter drive with Dell's help. Learned the brush tricks for getting it all back together. Saw an old starter on ebay for $20 bucks and bought it, thinking I could rebuild it and keep it for a spare. Starter is in pretty poor shape, lots of rust. Brushes are worn way down and the wires are frayed and in terrible shape. I still have not been able to even get it apart, been soaking it for a couple of days. The brush springs are so brittle one has cracked off. I see rebuild parts available but wonder if its worth it and if its something I can do. I assume there will be some soldering required for new brush wires. How feasible is it to rebuild one of these things or should I toss it and acceapt my $20 loss.

You may still be money ahead. Most places I have checked for a 6v genny either require a core or $40.....You just cut that in half.

If you have a recent rebuilt starter it is unlikely that you will need another for the next 40 years or so but if you want a spare just in case you can trade this one in on a rebuilt one and save it back for that rainy day 40 years hence.

Try cleaning it up the best you can and then cart it into a rebuild shop and see what they say.

If the armature can be cleaned up, and the coil casing is good as well as the endcap and brush holders... you might be in business with a spare starter for less than a hundred. not too shabby.
At any rate.. if they tell you it is a lost cause... hold on to it.. perhaps even one part of it may be good.. armature, or coil casing if nothing else. And like you said.. if it is completely beat.. it was a 20 dollar experement.. about the same price as a good oil change...
