We recently moved to a new farm that has a water softening system. I know nothing about these systems and would appreciate any feedback concerning their use. All I know is that when the tank holding the granular salt is low, I have to dump in a new one. Our system is also set up to automatically backwash itself once or twice a day. If I was to replace this system, what brands are reliable and what should I stay away from? Thanks.

Water treatment is my profession. It is my opinion that if you unit is regenerating everyday it is a bad thing. I have plumbed my system so that the waste brine goes into my sump pump and out into the gutter drains to the road so that all that salt doesn't upset the bio-mass in my septic system. The Boss they recomended sounds fine. I would like a new system myself that measures the water flow and only regenerates itself when a certain amount of water has been softened. Mine regenerates from a clock, whether it needs it or not. You should have your water tested by someone to tell you what you need. Good luck

Just remember if you have a power failure to reset your timer so it re-generates at night when you don't need to use the water.
Depending on your water, such as seeing some rust in the fixtures, you can add salt pellets with "Red Out". Have your well water tested to find out what you need.

Rich,
I simply can't add a thing to what Ron from IL says about the Water Boss.
I installed one in our new home over a year ago and have had no problems with it.
It's a quality product.

Rich,

We've had a WaterBoss BigBoss softener for abour six years now. It is an on-demand type. That is, it monitors usage with a flow meter, and only re-gens when needed, at a preset time (ours is 2 a.m.). We've had little trouble with it. The original cost is about $500. It uses about 1/4 the amount of salt (15#/re-gen) and 45 minutes per cycle (our old Culligan took over three hours to re-gen!) I'd recommend it. They sell them at Lowe's (probably Menard's too).

Good luck!

Ron

I can't recommend a specific brand, as available brands may vary regionally, but one general comment... The newer systems typically use an electronic controller, which monitors the actual gallons of water you use, and controlls the regeneration cycles accordingly, instead of doing it every day or every other day, etc., using a fixed timer.

This results in decreased use of salt, and less water from the regeneration cycle dumped in your septic system.
