This has been a great tractor. It has always needed the pto running to activate the 3point hitch. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be that way or not. It's never been a problem, until recently. Now when you raise the hitch, it shakes. When you set it back down, it seems to work fine. When it's in the up position and you put the clutch in, the hitch will not stay up. As soon as you dis-engage the clutch, it drops to the ground. Let the clutch out and it raises back up shaking like a wet dog. Any Ideas?

My hydraulics worked fine until last weekend when they would barely raise and wouldn't lower unless they were clear to the top. Considering we'd had an extended cold spell I hoped I had some ice in the valves, mucking them up. Yesterday it warmed up enough to thaw a little and the hydraulics worked just like they should. See the link below for Zane Sherman's good troubleshooting explanation. Bookmark it or print it off. It'll come in handy if you have an N. Good luck. Steve 8N 169302

They are right. The PTO shaft is what drives the hitch hydraulic pump, therefore it's gotta be running to make the hitch move. As far as your shaking and not being able to hold the lift up, I'd say you've likely got a valve hanging up or stuck in the pump. They are located in the valve blocks on either side of the pump. See an FO-4 manual for more details. If the pump is otherwise still quiet when it operates, it may just need a fresh set of valves and a good cleaning. The valve kit and a gasket kit will run you well under $50. Good luck!

Have you checked your level on your fluid lately? Mark H.
