Just about the time I think I have learned most everything about the appearances of these tractors along comes a lot of diff. things I didn't know. I love it. Lets all add one or two diff. on 1939 - 1942 -9ns. I will start with double rib fenders, 1939 to early part of 1940. Does any one know when they changed? ( I don't know) LET GAMES BEGIN. BURT.

Don't forget the strange 9x32" rear wheels as opposed to the common 10x28s. Always liked the 28's a lot better than the 32's. Oh well.

third party image

Here is one for you. It looks like a Factory Seal on the Lift Control with the number "U 6345" stamped into it. It has a little original paint on it marching the part paint and this part has not been repainted as far as I can see. It is sealed around the Casted part on rhe control. I wonder if it is a inspection tag from when it was built?? Mark H.

Willy,

Years ago, in our area, when a dealer would trade on a piece of equipment, and put it on their lot, they would install a tag like yours to identify the unit. Some were embossed with the dealer's name, and some just were serially numbered.

Well, I just found out about the Cast Aluminum Radiator cap. Went back to the originality guide and sure enough, it was in there. Just hadn't noticed it before. That and the fact that the left and right brake pedals are identical. Always found that funny with the left brake having the little nub sticking out for the parking brake!

Burt don't forget to add that the first double rib fenders had around 12 rivits. That seemed to end around # 6000???? Just recently there was a 1940 floating around Bethel Oh that is said to be owened by the original family and it has 1 1 rib and a 2 rib?? I will try to see if I can find out the serial #.It was for sale on e-bay about 6 months ago but I dont think it sold? Thanks Jason Grooms... (jagperf@aol.com)

If it has one smooth, then originally, both were smooth. The reason they went to the riveted design was the huge smooth casting was prone to getting air bubbles which weakened the casting and later broke. Most likely, one of them broke and was replaced with the later design. This is common and that's why smooth hub axles are somewhat rare and need to be taken care of due to being fragile.
