I just bought a 9n that appears to have an aluminum dash and a hi-lo sherman transmission. I wonder if this is a collector item and how much it might be worth. the tractor has good oil pressure and the metal is pretty good.any help would be appreciated.

Hey Philip, you're not the only one that's ever wondered about the aluminum dash etc. My 9N (ser#3667) has the alum. dash and Sherman Hi-Lo like yours and if I'm not mistaken, my grandaddy bought it with the Sherman installed. My daddy said they also had an extra set of wheels and tires so they could put DUALS on it! That had to be a sight! He said they'd pull trees (for home cut lumber) out of the woods big enough that you had to steer with the brakes! I've got some handwritten records on the tractor that we found after my mom passed away in 2/00. They paid only 16.25 cents per gallon for gas then and that was with the highway taxes included! Enjoy your N and if you possibly can, find some history on it about the orginal owners. These tractors are so versatile its unreal. I don't think I'd take any amount of money for mine with all the family history involved unless I was slam broke and then I'd probably try something else . Gotta go now, it's snowing here in Southampton Co., Va and my kids will probably be stuck home from school again tomorrow. Won't Mama love that? Have a good week.

They are pretty common, the first 80,000 had the alluminum dash, Shermans may have been installed in 1/4 of the 305,000 9N's made by dealers over the years.

Hey Philip-
First, find the engine block serial number and determine what year it is. If it is an original 1939 9N then the serial number would bear this out. Sometimes the blocks were changed when they got cracked or blown. Only the first 700 or so 9N's had aluminum grilles. HTH

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that the Aluminum grille's were used to serial# 50,000. There were only 722 Aluminum hood tractors and there grille's were different from the aluminum grille's used in the steel hood tractors. Bill a friend of mine is lucky enough to have an original grille with only one rib missing, that tractor is around serial# 25,000. Thanks Jason
