Axle binds up when switching from forward to reverse. Tries to move but is locked up. by switching back and forth between forward and reverse it will eventually move. once moving it is fine. What do you think is wrong?

had an axle break on a 641, and you don't have that. Due to spider gearing, if you break an axle, she won't move.

The rivets holding the final drive ring gear to the differential case are known to break, or you could have a bad bearing or missing tooth in the diferential or ring and pinion.

You could be locking up in 2 gears. You might want to pull the shifter cover and make sure your shift forks lock nuts are all tight on the transmisson forks. Just a thought and maybe a worn shifter. You could have a bad bearing in the pinion shaft on the rear end that is going into a bind when you change directions or your deflecting plate the holds the rear differential square may have come loose. Brakes could be binding also and you are working them free?? Mark H.

Thanks for your opinions. It's been running about 50/50 on the trans. trying to go into 2 gears or a bearing problem. a local shop thinks the forkin the tran. may be bent. I guess I will start there and keep you posted.

Alan, funny you should post this topic. My 8N is doing something similar when I go from reverse to foward but I am pretty sure it is brake related. I does not do it all the time so I will wait until better weather to have a look-see.

thanks for the replys. I do not think it is brakes, since in a very short time it has gotten much worse. sometimes it does not bind up, but nothing happens when I let the clutch out, then all of a sudden it will catch, especially if I roll the tractor a little.
