Hello,
I just removed my front mount distribuor in order to install new ignition kit. I noticed that the smaller metal tab on the engine side is bent and looks like it has grooves on it. This is not how I remember it from last time I took it off. The tractor starts ok but after it warms up it has no power. I'm sure this isn't just a matter of a warn out distributer. I could use some help on this one.. Anyone have any idea's on what is chewing this up I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.

The JB Weld might work but not sure how it will hold up over the long haul? You might be able to press it out and weld it up again and file it to shape. I would just get another one. You see them on eBay or you could maybe get another center for it and rebuild it. That JB Weld is some good stuff I use it quite a bit for repaires but have not used it on a moving/rubbing surface befor. Mark H.

I've ordered another shaft. Better safe than sorry. Besides I don't remember how it originally looked.
Anyone have any advice on how to install it so this doesn't happen again?

Put the two screws in, but only a few turns. This ensures it is lined up with the cam. Then, push the distributor lightly towards the engine with one hand, while turning the rotor with the other. When it lines up it will drop into place snug against the block. Hold it agaist the block with one hand and tighten the bolts up finger tight with the other hand. Then snug them up with a wrench to socket. A cam and distributor tang in good shape is offset to ensure it only goes on one way.

Good luck,
Dan

Yep - mine looked like that - clean the area real good of oil and re-buid it with J B Weld - worked for me.

I am not sure if you are talking about the two middle tabs (tangs) on the back of the distributor that mates with a sloted cam set in the engine block. If you are - mine was chipped on the tangs and worn well into the slot on the cam when I took mine off for the first time. It appears the previous owner(s) forced it in backwards once and chipped half the tang off both tabs, and the slot on the cam got chipped or worn as well. The distributor was in great shape otherwise. I simply re-built the tangs and filled in the worn/chipped area in the slot with J B Weld and let it dry a few days. Put it back together and it fit like a glove - of course I had to adjust the timing now that the slack was out of it. I took it off the other day after running it to see if it was holding up - not a mark or wear at all on the "fixed" area. If you don't have any wobble in your distributor shaft, this may be a cheap simple fix to keep you from having to re-build your disrtibutor with new parts.

Good luck,
Dan

Are you talking about the bolt ears sticking out the side of the dist? I am not clear what you mean tab on the back side. The part that goes into the cam gear that turns the rotor? If this is bent? It could give you problems with wear on the cam slots and cause play in the dist bushing knocking the dwell (Point Gap)out of specs while spining at higher rpms makeing your tractor run bad. Mark H.

Mark and P.F.
Read on this board that it only takes a small gorilla to install the front mount distributor 180 out. It will bolt down (sorta) and run (sorta). There is an off-set to the tabs and a corresponding off-set on the end of the cam. In other words, t'ain't simian proof.

You right on that point! It is strange that people forse things together when they are a machine fit in the first place. Kind of like spark plugs best to screw them in by hand first befor putting the socket on them and getting the first thread messed up! It might be time for a new dist if the cam tabs are now bent it will only get worse over time. Mark H.

PF..... ....I'm with Russ, if'n ya described your frontmount distributor engineside tab correctly, your distributor was incorrectly installed with a BFH. The distributor is driven by an "off-set" tang scheme and can be eazily installed correctly with NO FORCE. Check your distributor base bolthole mounting ears for CRACKS.

Replacement parts are available except for the distributor base, which will require a NEW distributor.

Yes, the N-Engine is so good, it will run 180* outta time, but you won't have any power..... ...Dell

Hey guys, I don't claim to be a mechanic, in fact I would just as soon take it down to my local garage, but you know what they would do if I drove in.

According to you, I can purchase a new distributor rod (middle thing) and install it and I don't have to worry about something worse?

Take a picture of it and post it in parts and peices to the left of the page then you can let us know it is there. Easy to do. Mark H.
