I just bought a 43 model 9n and it had a alternator on it and a 12 volt battery. The tractor wasn't charging the battery so I started investigating. I don't know much about this so the question is how do you step the voltage down to the points. I can't see anything that looks different than if the tractor was still 6 volt. What is the proper way to make this work. Thanks Philip

Look further up in the newer postings and "Dell" told how to measure the resistance to determine if it is a 12v or 6v coil.

Congrats on getting an N.

If it is indeed a 43, then it is a 2n you own... thoug the differences between the 9n and 2n are few.

Well, if the conversion was done 'correctly' it may have a real 12v front mount coil on it. If it does.. that coil will hav ethe right primary resistance to limit the current for the points, and the coil will stand up to the 12v via the battery.

If it is still the oem 6v coil, it will need the oem ballast resistor ( A8NN12250B ), and a 12 to 6v dropping resistor ( 8NE 10306 ).

Check to make sure it is negative ground, and then start making some voltage checks. Is it possible the ammeter just isn't worlking? Or the previous owner added a fuse inline with the alternator?

From the part numbers I saw, there is a different part listing for the 9n/2n resistor block than the early 8n resistor block.. though both ignitions are virtually identical. If you do decide that you need to purchase a ballast resistor.. make sure you get one for the 9n/2n.
