I have a '47 8N (8n15825)and need a generator. The parts book shows a 3 brush genny that was used in 1948 -49 only. They show a 2 brush used untill the engine change. Can I use the much more common 2 brush or will I have to search for the hard to find 3 brush? Or, will the 9/2N 39-47 work as well? What shortcommings will I encounter if I can't find the 3 brush. Thanks in advance!

Art..... ...The 9N/2N 1-terminal 3rd brush genny will NOT WORK inplace of the early 8N's 3rd brush 3-wire genny.

The early 8N's had a 3rd brush 3-wire genny with squarecan voltage regulator. If'n I remember rightly, the 3rd brush genny is slightly smaller diameter than the later 2-brush 3-wire genny. Which beggs the question wheather the 2-brush genny (4.81 dia) will physically fit the 3rd brush (4 1/2 dia) aft brackett. It should be intutitively obvious the aft genny brackets won't interchange.

I would have no heartburn changing over from an 11 amp 3rd brush 3-wire genny to a 20 amp 2-brush 3 wire genny since eather will use the same latest 4-terminal squarecan voltage regulator..... ..respectfully, Dell

The bracket for a smaller 3 brush generator will not work on the 2 brush model without extreme shadetree engineering - I speak from experience...

good news, New Holland is about to release the 3 brush version of this generator. If you can be a little patient, perhaps you could be one of my 'field test' units, which won't cost you anything, provided you tell me how it's working every couple of months or so

You can use the two brush generator but you will have to rewire the tractor to accomodate a voltage regulator. The three brush generator did not use a voltage regulator but instead used a generator cut-out. The voltage was regulated by the third movable brush. If the battery was undercharged the brush was moved to raise the voltage output and if it was too hot the brush was moved to lower the voltage. The screw that moved the third brush was marked + and -.

The older 9N/2N generators would work if they mounted the same but I am not sure that they do in fact mount the same way. They are on the right side of the engine in all from 39 to 50 but the mounting I think is different because of the governor linkage being differnet in the 9N/2N and 8N.

Best thing to do is to install a one wire delco alternator and reduce the voltage to the ignition coil and be done with it. If it has lights they would have to be replaced with 12 volt bulbs too.
