8N valve guides

I’m rebuilding a 1952 8N engine. My question concerns the valve guides.
The old valve guides were a mix of different styles but they were all the one piece kind. Some had a grove where a rubber seal was installed and some didn’t have the grove.

All the new guides I bought came with rubber seals and a corresponding grove on the guide. The Intakes went in fairly easy with the seal installed but the exhaust is a different story.

The exhausts valves are the free rotating style. No matter what I do the rubber seal gets sliced while installing. Tried heating, lubricating ect ... Has anyone run into this problem? Are the rubber seals even necessary?
I have the original Ford service manual which doesn’t say anything about it.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

The exhaust valves are not supposed to have seals on the guides. There is probably old carbon build up in the exhaust guide bores from years of not having seals.

The original Ford rebuild kits had four guides that carried the seals and four that didn't. Like what you pulled out.

The intakes produce a suction at the guide and the seals are needed to prevent loss of vacuum. The exhaust valves do not produce suction. Rather they produce a little blow by into the crankcase if anything but nothing to cause symptoms.

Throw away the extra seals.

Don't worry. Be happy!
