Does anyone have a good method of cleaning up/restoring the aluminum data plates that over the years have been scrathed, painted, etc? I am mainly thinking of the patent plate on the upper steering housing, but would also like to clean up the data plate on the Ferguson mower mount bracket and an old Dearborn scoop and Carrington back blade. I have heard Don has them(patent plates) and they look pretty good, but if it can be done I would like to restore these old ones. As always, thanks in advance.

The brass seems much better than the aluminum one I have to work with but I will give it try. Thanks again! Alan

Mine was made of brass, I used Simmichrome( a very fine polishing compound) it cleaned up real nice. I would then reccomend sealing it with a clear lacquer or at least a good coat of wax to prevent oxidation.

I used a fine steel wool. Cleaned up nicely. Don't take too much off of the plates. Then you can read the numbers.

Ya can't see the numbers too well. Too much glare. :-)

I masked off and sprayed some clear poly on the plate to keep it from tarnishing again. It's been fine for 3 years now.
