As a new owner of an 8N (low serial # 1947) I have been told to shut off the gas each time the tractor is shut off. I am wondering if everyone (or most everyone) does this, or was I advised as a "safety precaution"? Just curious

I agree with all the issues on the safety of shutting off the fuel when you are done. However, I have been running an experiment for the last 13 years on my '52 8N. I only shut the fuel off to work on the carburetor (two maybe three times that I remember in that period). I haven't had any of the identified problems mentioned on the board. Also, some people recommend running the carb out of gas. Well I have found that this unnecessary and I theorize it's worse than leaving the carb full. This is based on owning lots of engines of all types. You cannot remove all of the gas in the carb so when you run it down there is a small amount left in the bottom of the bowl. It takes less time to evaporate this small amount than it would a bowl full. So you end up leaving more dried deposits on the bottom of the bowl. Now I have rarely ever taken a carb apart that was dry inside, there is always some gas in the bottom unless it has not been run for years. I don't think that bowl drying out is a problem for regularly used equipment (unless there is a leak and then there is nothing left to dry out). I have searched for gummy/dry deposits in a lot of carburetors and only found them in carbs that have sat static for years.

I never shut off the fuel valve or remove the key & I've never had the first problem caused by doing this --- had my 8N for 5 years. But after reading all these posts I just might mend my ways!!! My advice --- these guys are smarter than me....

My grandfather taught me to drive on his 2N, a long time ago. I can still remember him telling me that you always turn the gas off when you were done using the tractor for any length of time. I never questioned him and even today, I still turn off the gas on my 2N when put it away.

One person on this board could never remember the gas shutoff so went the no-brain method and installed a electric fuel shutoff for a Melrose Bobcat skidloader wired to the coil. Key on - fuel on, key off - fuel off. Nameless individual wasn't nearly so forgetful ten years ago...

Most advise shutting the gas off so it won't run through the carburetor if the needle valve doesn't close completly.

I think you will find if you turn off the fuel and then run your tractor till the carb runs out of gas you will be better off, saves a buildup of vanish in the gas in case you don't use the tractor for awhile.

If you do this, don't forget to turn off the key when it stalls. If you don't, you may end up buying a new coil. BTDT Steve 8N 169302

That's true , but if you get in a habit of turning it off and taking the key out of the ignition , it isn't any different than when you leave your vehicle that you drive on a daily basis. To me , sometimes a pain I go to turn on and find that my keys are in my pocket.

I think most folks close the gas valve when they shut the machine down. I always make sure that I do when I've finished for the day.

I never used to shut off the gas.Now I do for the simple reason that if your float sticks open gas will contnually run through the carb, fill up the intake tube and dump into the cylinders filling them up.When you hop on and try to start it, it will "lock up". Liquids are not easily compressionable and will most likely damage your engine

I've learned a tremendous amount from this board, including the two basic things I do every time I turn off the tractor....i)turn off the gas valve and ii) remove the ignition key, and hang it in the same spot each time...its not the key removal itself thats important but this way I never leave it turned on by mistake.....Brian.
