I am looking for any advice/experience that anyone might have with the following steering problem. I was driving along yesterday everything was fine when all of a suddne I realized I could not turn left. The steering wheel was free spinning to the left, it was actually unscrewing from down inside the steering column somehow. If I turn to the right it tightens up and seems to work ok, as long as I turn right, but any attempt to turn left, unscrews the entire shaft.

Anyone had similar experience or suggestions on what the problem might be. I have never had the steering assembly apart so I'm not quite sure what broken part would cause this problem. I am hoping for a quick fix. I don't have the time right now for a overhaul of the steering, maybe later.

First things first...we need to know what year and model the tractor is. all the 9Ns and 2Ns were the same in the steering box, but 8Ns had two or three different varieties and each have different fixes. Generally, though, it sounds like the lower bearing has disintegrated and is allowing the steering column gear (on the end of the steering shaft) to unscrew itself instead of turning the gears on the little arms. Remember, spiral cut gears are kinda like screws.

Sorry about that, I knew I was forgetting something. My tractor is a 1950, 8N.

So is that an early style box.. or a late style steering box? The cutoff happens mid early 50...

Does your box have adjustable studs opposite of the steering sector arms and are they held in with ocal plates with 2 bolts? .. or are the sector arms held in with round plates with many bolts... etc.

Either way I'm betting at least top bearing disintegrated.. if not the bottom one as well... Probably lack of lube on the top bearing.

Best part of all is the repair procedure.

Remove grill bumper, steering wheel, drain gas, remove gas line, unbolt doglegs from support, and remove hood+ doglegs and gas tank as one piece.

Remove battery box, battery, throttle linkage, and choke handle / linkage.
remove oil line from dash, as well as electrical connections.. lights, ignition, etc.

Remove dash and cowling.

Now you are down to the steering tube and box... it is simple from there. Hope it is just the top bearing. If you are super lucky.. it will just be the top bearing mangled , and you will find all the pieces( magnet on rod to get ALL rolers out ), and not have to go any further into the system, assuming steering is otherwise tight.

Many of us have had to rebuild our steering.. If you don't have one.. get a copy of the I&T FO-4 manual.. has pics of all three steering setups..

Soundguy.
