Very obscure, but my 9N would randomly miss under load and cut out. After doing everything, I changed the ignition switch and that fixed it. I would have never believed that that would have acted like that, but then you learn with these tha t nothing surprises you.

Ray, I am not a pro. you got this old 8 running with a lot of work ( pat on the back )One thing you might check is a lot of up and down slop in the distributer shaft,if the bushings are worn it will cause problems like uneven idle. good luck.

The carb probably needs cleaning(more than the fuel bowl.) Also the centrifugal advance may not be functioning properly. I'd start with the carb cleaning and adjustment, making sure the plugs, plug wires, points, condensor and rotor and cap are in good condition. If the valves haven't been adjusted, that would be a good idea, too. Do the simple stuff first. That includes fuel filters.

Probably lack of fuel which is either a blockage or poor carb adjustment. Poor combustion (weak spark)could also be the cause which the new plugs and such would fix.

Try adjusting the main knob. Open it up another turn. Cleaning out the filters and such as bg suggested is also good advice. There are a number of inline screens. One in the bowl, one in the tank, and another where the line goes into the carb.

I found that my fuel shut off is broken and I don't get good flow unless I open it all the way up (reserve setting).

Try taking the fuel line off the carb and running some into a can. If you see a poor flow then start looking for the cause, or series of small causes.

Ray, Advance: Remove dist, points, condensor wire,
timing adj screw (on side)& coil. The points Plate is held in place with a retainer (note the position of the loop, allows clearance for coil pigtail)remove the retainer. The outer bushing
and the points plate come out as a unit. (Sometimes tight, need to wiggle) When you have that out the shaft pulls right out. The Weights
& spring assembly allow rotation (CCW) between
the two shafts. Rust,Gunk, Broken Springs

Hope this helps,
