Rick..... ...really, the starter solenoid don't care 6 or 12 volts. Solenoid don't care positive or negative ground. Solenoid, like the starter motor, are designed for "INTERMITTANT DUTY". The "rule" is: Operate for 1 minute, letter kool for 5 minutes. You VIOLATE THAT RULE, you will pay the consequences. And yeah, you probably barffed yer new 12 volt starter motor by OVERHEATING the motor and melting your soldered wire connections. BTW, most people convert to 12 volts, so the 12 volts on the 6 volt starter will zipp the motor over faster for faster starting. And NO, 12 volts on the 6 volt starter don't hurt it, as long as you don't crank forever. A good engine/12 volt starter should start in less than 4 cranks, (usually just 2 cranks) thats 4 seconds of crankin' time. If'n you don't gitter started in 10 seconds, you gotts problems and better be fer findin' out WHY!!!..... ..respectfully, Dell
