Starter Smoking

After attempting to start my 8N too many times, I guess I damaged my newly rebuilt starter. This morning the starter started to smoke I have a 12 volt "stealth" system. The starter was rebuilt for 12 volts - whatever that means. I was having a lot of carb trouble so I was cranking quite a bit. The engine did start finally, but it must have been too much for the starter. Here are my two questions: Is it really ok for the starter relay to be 6 volts given that everything on my tractor is 12 volts? Could that have been part of my problem - given excessive cranking?
Thanks much.

Rick..... ...really, the starter solenoid don't care 6 or 12 volts. Solenoid don't care positive or negative ground. Solenoid, like the starter motor, are designed for "INTERMITTANT DUTY". The "rule" is: Operate for 1 minute, letter kool for 5 minutes. You VIOLATE THAT RULE, you will pay the consequences.

And yeah, you probably barffed yer new 12 volt starter motor by OVERHEATING the motor and melting your soldered wire connections.

BTW, most people convert to 12 volts, so the 12 volts on the 6 volt starter will zipp the motor over faster for faster starting.

And NO, 12 volts on the 6 volt starter don't hurt it, as long as you don't crank forever. A good engine/12 volt starter should start in less than 4 cranks, (usually just 2 cranks) thats 4 seconds of crankin' time. If'n you don't gitter started in 10 seconds, you gotts problems and better be fer findin' out WHY!!!..... ..respectfully, Dell

DELL, thanks for the info. If I told you that gas was seeping from between the carb halves, do you believe that that is a significant contributing factor to my hard starting and lack of ability to get the engine to idle? Thanks again.

the float is too high, or is sticking and its flooding.

I have that problem on an 8N belonging to the lady down the road, just picked up a kit for the carb and have to tear it down and soak it and rebuild it.
