Anyone know of a source for a quality 6 volt battery - the ones I get from the local auto store (Kragens) only last 6 -12 months in my 8N.

Thanks for any ideas.

Paul

Paul: In November of 2000 I bought my 2nd 8N. It is a '51. The seller told me that he had replaced the battery 2 years ago and that I should be good for a few years. Was he ever right! It was and still is an Interstate "Workaholic" When my '48 8N needs a battery it will be the same product. My local FNH Dealer sells "their own" brand of 6 volt which he tells me is made in Mexico by Exide. He frankly suggests that I would be much better off to get an Interstate! Between my own experience and my dealers recommendation, I will never use anything but the Interstate Workaholic! I will try to post a hot link to the data sheet for this battery:

Paul..... ..byte my tongue, but John Deere sells a quality tractor rugged 6 volt battery for $50 or so. These batterys are made more rugged inside to JD specs to withstand "off-road" environment.

When my Dodge Cummins Diesel OEM dual battery inst's went south after 5 yrs, (couldn't water the wetcells) I tried to find "Optima" gel batterys $160 ea, not in stock. Dodge Dealer wanted $140 ea for replacement wet cells, not in stock. Sears Die-Hards wanted $120 ea, instock. Interstate wanted $100 ea. Checked the Dodge Cummins TDR bbs, they recommend the John Deere 12 volt batterys. $60 ea. (and you can check the water)

Die-Hards die-eazy..... ..Dell

I would be checking your generator output voltage. If you are overcharging your battery your're killing it youself. I use NAPA automotive 6 volt batteries in a 53 Chev 2ton and 2 N-series tractors and a TO-20 and They seem to outlast the warrenty by a year or so.

I agree.. see if you have a battery 'only' dealer.. like interstate batteries.. next try a farm store like TSC.. or napa industrial batteries.

Just off hand.. what group size do these batteries fall in? ( for our N's )

Check your phone book for a "Battery Store" Locally here its called "batteries plus" and all they sell is batteries. What you need is a hard core, industrial strength, hairy chested, 6 volter that is rated for agricultural use. Wimpy run of the mill 6 volt batteris are for the old 48 Packard that you drive once a year in the Fourth Of July Parade. If you can't find a battery retailer, try Western Auto, Advance auto, Napa, and just be specific that you want a battery with some muscle!---Rob

All,

Thanks for the info - I'll check out the sources and check the charging system.

Should I just check the voltage at the battery terminals and what is the limit for over charging - I still need to get a good manual that has the specs.

Thanks again.

Paul
