I have a 53 Jubilee that I've had no over temp problems with.....Other the winter I replaced the radiator, hoses and various other things including a new eng temp probe and gauge, parts were as recommended by the dealer.....I did not replace the thermostat.....I do not ever remember being in the red range with the old gauge but with the new one I watch the temp go into the red zone and stay for awhile until the themostat opens and then it will actually drop down into the yellow and build up slowly to red again and repeat the cycle..... Question is ....is this normal and I just never saw it ...or ...can it be the wrong range of gauge/probe....or....can I have a valid thermostat problem..... . This test was done just sitting in my driveway not actually working....Any opinions greatly appreciated....Thanks....Alan

I went thru the same problem. Turned out that it was too low on coolant. I know it sounds too simple, but I thought I would throw it out.

You did not state how long you had it running. Before trying anything that adds cost and labor just be certain the system is not air locked. Carefully let it come up to operating range allowing the stat to open and be certain it remains full of water. Let cool again and re check to see if water level went down. If you had the stat out you may have put it back reversed, check it too. To test stats just toss them in a pan of water on the stove, slowly heat while reading temp with the wifes candy or cooking thermometer and see if it opens at rated temp or not. Bad ones usually refuse to open even when the water boils in case you do not have a 200+ degree suitable thermometer.

Allan..... ...thats semi-normal. but for $10, I'd replace the thermostat ennyways. Make certain you re-intall "right-side out". Some thermostats can be installed bassawkwards..... .Dell
