51 8N sputters

I have had a 51 8N for about 2.5 months. About a month ago it was hard to start and would stall when a load was put on the engine. On advise from this forum and the local NH dealer, I replaced the spark plugs, cleaned air cleaner, fixed manifold leak, and rebuilt carb (there was lots of junk in the carb). Now the tractor starts easily and runs almost perfect. When I start the tractor it runs perfect for 60 to 90 seconds. After that it starts to have a slight sputter. The sputter is more pronounced at idle and less at full throttle. The tractor is doing what I need it to do but the sputter is annoying and I would like to fix it. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing the sputter and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Ryan

Well I can't help you but if you find the problem let me know. I still have a sputter at idle when warm and when going down hill with the engine holding back..

Does it smooth out when you apply some choke to the motor? Mine does.

Good luck I have been fighting this problem for 8 months.....

Ryan -- Lots of posts in the archieves about "sputtering" N's. And lots of opinions about what the cause is "sure to be". But remember this -- it can be one cause or another or multiple causes masking the other soooo when you're trying to get that engine to run real sweet and it doesn't quite do it -- first do some research if you need ideas and then start with the simplest and eliminate ALL possible causes, one at a time, simplest first and even if you seem to have found the problem check out the other possibilities as well. In other words, check EVERYTHING every time and pretty soon you'll have a sweet running engine that will quit giving you problems of ANY kind. On the other hand, some would prefer to just fix the obvious and then fix the next problem next week. It can become a form of entertainment.

Ryan..... ...splutter is almost always a sparkie problem. You write..... "The sputter is more pronounced at idle and less at full throttle"..... thats because the flywheel effect is smoothing out the miss so you don't notice it as much.

Based uppon your description of short time duration before spluttering/missing, I'd guess BAD/Cracked sparkie wires. You doubt? Starter up on DARKNITE and watch your blue sparkies dance on the sparkie wires.

Sparkie wires should be soft and flexable when cold. Replace with copper-core sparkie wire. DO NOT USE modern carbon-core radio anti-static sparkie wire.

One of the founding members of this great N-Board ussta claim 80% of all carb problems were found in the ignition system..... ...Dell

Ryan, you are now into fine tuning, which is more of an art than a science. My general rule is to start with the easiest and cheapest possible solutions first. Do you have a FO-4 manual? If so, I'd just try adjusting the carb. And, a can of HEET in the gas tank is $1, and will take care of any water problems. Then, pull the drain plug on the bottom of the carb, and check the fuel flow. You might also want to remove the air cleaner hose and see if that helps. In other words, try and isolate the problem between fuel & air. I don't think it's electrical at this point.
