Thanks the Smith 8N site was great.
We live on a remote island, to be able to swap parts will be handy. I can 't wait to get started.

with the exception of a select few steering, transmission, lift cover, and brake parts, most of the pieces are interchangible. You can even swap engines from an 8N to a 9N or 2N. If you try to swap transmissions, the steering box has to go with it as well as the dash. Also, the 8N pump must stay with an 8N lift cover and vice versa with the 9N/2N. They stay matched. Same deal with the axle trumpets and rear end housing and transmission housing (due to brake setup differences on the 8N). Generally, if you have two tractors like a 9N and a 2N, you can make one good tractor. I would try to keep the 9N and 2N together as they are more closely related as opposed to trying to mix and match 9N and 8N components which takes a little more effort.

The second one you list is missing a digit. It should either start "9N" or "8N". Lots of parts are interchangeable, even engines. If condition of all three is equal, pick an 8N and concentrate on that since it has more desireable features (4 speed trans instead of 3 speed, both brake pedals on the right side, position control and draft control instead of draft control only).

All 8N serial numbers start "8N". All 9N and 2N serial numbers start "9N". Here's a place that may help you figure out what you have. Click the "Identifying your N" button and read that. Then go back and click the "FAQs" button and read the essay on "Buying an 8N". It will give you lots of things to look at when evaluating the condition of a used N. Might help you decide which one to salvage and which to part out.

Ruby - Based on serial number only, the 2nd and 3rd tractors are pretty much twins and newer than the 1st tractor, and many parts are the same or exchangeable for all three tractors. Parts availability for any of these are not much of a problem. Here are your options as I see them depending on condition of each tractor:

1 - Steal parts from any to help get either of the 2nd or 3rd tractor running.
2 - Sell the 1st and either the 2nd or 3rd to create a parts fund for the remaining tractor
3 - Sell all 3 to fund the purchase of a functioning tractor.

It all depends on what is wrong with each tractor and how much you are willing and capable to do to get one of them running again.

I see from Jim's and Jeb's replies that the middle serial number could be either a 2n or 8N, so it might be most similar to either the 1st or 3rd tractor. Go with their recommendations.
