ORC Guard

I'd kind of like to leave the ORC on my 8N, even when I'm not using the PTO- but really hate to have that spinning shaft exposed. An old JD or IH guard could probably be modified to work (or something of that nature could be made). Seems like one could even make a "flip up" guard that would cover even more of the spinning parts.
Anyone out there invented any thing like this?
Ideas, comments and/or pics appreciated.
Thanks-

A piece of about 4 inch PVC with a cap glued on it could probably be made quick removable.

Why doesn't someone engineer the ORC right into the drive shaft of the mower. The 2000 I acquired had one on the PTO shaft and all kinds of stuff (wheat straw, hay, weedeater string, etc) was wound around the PTO shaft between the ORC and the differental housing. I finally removed the ORC and cleaned it out and plan on getting a cover to screw on over the PTO shaft. I'm mostly box scraping and would like to keep it clean.

OK Guys, help out a newbie. What is an ORC? Is this an Over-Rin Clutch, such as can be slipped over the PTO shaft, and sold at Tractor Supply?

It would be nice to have a "tunnel" cover over the PTO shaft, to prevent anything from getting tangled in the ORC, or the front "U" joint, but you're probably on your own to adapt a shield from another tractor. I am used to running Deeres in actual farming applications, and they had a shield over the shaft, even in the days of the 'N's, and I miss that extra protection when using my 'N. I have often thought of adapting a shield to mine, but would hesitate to advise someone else how to do it for liability reasons!

Those sheilds and guards come up for sale all the time on eBay. Half of them are just the covers and the other half are mated to a PTO extension that bolts on like the belt pulley. Check them out. It has been done before.

On mine.. I use a connector that is spring loaded.. button style.. comes of in a few seconds.. and the standard pto cap goes on.

Guess with the 4 bolt pattern back there wouldn't be hard to fab a cone shaped cover that bolted on... but sounds like a bit of trouble to remove?

Guess a spring loaded duard like a NH would work.. etc..

What NH item are you referring to?
Do they have some sort of spring loaded giz?
Thanks-

I was in a hurry yesterday and couldn't elaborate.

like Dell said.. some ORC's pin on.. and some snap on with a spring loaded detent ball/plunger.. etc... easy top remove.

As for a shield.. the one posted below looks great.

I was thinking of adapting one from a newer NH tractor that would bolt on to the 4 pto bolts.. but that one looks much keener..

Pete..... ...theres 2-kinds of ORC's. one is held onto the tractor PTO shaft, (hidden behind the greese zerk) by a 2" spring roll pin. 'tuther is held on by a spring loaded thumb button. Eather work fine, just be certain you use an ORC with your brushhog..... ...Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher

Hi Pete, A member from WI posted this a while back.

I just built one this weekend and it should work out real well. It is strong enough to stand on and there is no chance of getting caught. I used a piece of 4" ID pipe 4" long. On one end I welded four tabs with holes located so that they will bolt in the four holes around the pto that hold the chain stays or if you have the added drawbar it is the four bolts that hold the drawbar bracket in place. on the other end of the 4" pipe I welded a large washer that fit inside and had a 2" hole in it. I then cut about 1/2" off of a 2" pipe coupling and welded that to the washer. The last step is to take a piece of 2" ID pipe that is threaded on one end and cut it 3" long. This will make the part that resembles the original cover. Weld a washer in the end opposite the threads and then a nut on the outside of the washer to use to tighten or remove it. I wanted to use the original cover but couldn't match the threads. Here's a picture of one:
