Just wondering out loud. I have seen conversion kits for installing V-8's & V-6's in a Ford 8N. Is this pretty much a "see what I did" thing or is there a practical reason for doing this. I have only had my 8N for about 6 months, under load, traction seems to be a limiting factor, not horsepower. Also an 8N idles at about 400 RPM, not sure a late model automotive motor can go that low. I am sure traveling in 4th gear could be an experience. Just curious.
Thanks

Check out Marv Baumann's website. This is a guy who can address all the issues that you are wondering about. He has even moved up to turbine powered.

If you've never met him you are missing a real treat. Quite a guy who loves his retirement projects.

The flat head 6 or V8's installed in the 40's @ 50's made a full 3 plow tractor out of the N's instead of small 2 Plow, they would compair to the 800 series, if you used cence then there was no problem with the extra power, the new engine changeovers are more for show

I think a V-10 Dodge viper motor would be awesome on an 8N. You know, with all the exhaust routed straight up, five on each side. I think you could time the longevity of the final drive components in milliseconds. But it would be interesting.

Sierously, my 8N has all the power I could ever need. The only thing I could really use on the old gal is some kind of more sierous grip tires. I can't imagine what could be more aggresive than the agricultural tires I bought from Tucker, but if I could find it, and afford it, I'd buy it. The downside is that my yard would probably look like an excavation site all the time, and then I am sure my wife would probably kill me. ----Rob

I gotta laugh... putting a 12 Volt electrical system on an 'N so that it is reliable and compatible with modern attachments is considered "butchery" by many, AND THEN THERE'S THE GUYS THAT WANT TO DO THIS! (LOL)

Actually, I have a spare 'N, and have squirreled away a little ISUZU diesel to put in it when I get a round 'tuit! (Of course a round 'tuit comes after the HONEY DO list, so fat chance that will ever happen!)

I am putting a 3.0 v6 fuel injected in my 8n at this time! Got the engine mounted to the bellhousing so far. The engine in the 8n needed a complete rebuild and I had this good v6 So I thougt I would give a try.

Well if you solved the traction issue, a tractor with V-8 power could flip and kill you faster. A good way to get win a Darwin award!

I would like to see one with a late model fuel injected 4 cylinder, maybe a 2.3 liter out of a ford ranger, or early 90's mustang.

I see it like you said, just a "look what I did" kinda thing. Lots more HP than the rest of the tractor's built for. I guess the extra weight might help with the traction but other than the novelty factor I can't think of any practical reason to do it. Just my opinion and you know what they say about those.
Later, Lee

P.S. I sure would like to have a flathead V8 8N, just for the sound if nothing else !!

15 t0 20 yr. ago I saw a 8 or 9N converted to a built up flathead for pulls I think, or just more power around the farm. It was in the "mother earth news" mag. It looked good and sanitary. An 8ba block was used.
