Hi guys, I'm getting close to moving time ( central California to Arkansas ), I will be renting a large Uhaul truck and towing my 8N on a Uhaul car carriers. My question is wheather or not this is legal or can you only tow cars this way. My local Uhaul guy is totally in the dark, he told me to pick up the truck and trailer and he doesn't have to know what I'm hauling, this sounds fishy have any of you done this or do I need an equipment trailer and if so what price am I looking at? Please help I'm going soon thanks

I've used U-Haul Auto-Transports to haul my '41 9N from Idaho to Michigan, Michigan to New Mexico, NM to Oregon, and back to North Idaho.

Worked great, I told 'em I was hauling a 1941 Ford convertable.

Where in Arkansas are you moving to? If Northwest Arkansas, we have a very active tractor club that would welcome you. Take a look at our Website in the making:
http://www.tiredironoftheozarks.com/ I have a 1948 8N, and there are a few more Ns in the club, as well as a Jubilee or two and some "hundred" series.

I used a uhaul carrier to haul my N down from Dallas(600 mi) No problem Jus make sure its chained down good and watch the tongue wt. Had to center her over the trailer wheels. Used chain binders at each wheel and the belly. Told the rental guy I was haulin "antique Ford"

Good luck

I have used one several times. It works fine. Just tell them it is a ford convertable or don't tell at all. Most of the time they don't ask.

Randy..... ....the U-Haul car trailer is more than addequate to haul your 2500# old Ford "convertable". You may want to "widen out just your front axle 1-hole (2-bolts each side). Makes 'em fit the rails more better. Rears ok. Block the wheels fore/aft. Then stretch your tractor fore/aft with come-along. Then over the tranny to keep it down on the trailer.

You might want to search the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board for more tractor hauling hints..... .....Dell

I used a UHaul trailer to get mine home Dealer didn't ask I didn't say. Worked out fine just leave it in first lock the brakes whether they are any good or not. The tire net will fit over the fronts strap the rears across the axle hard enough to squat them a bit. No one has ever gottn into trouble for having to many tiedowns. After the first 2 or 3 miles pull over and retighten everything and stop periodically to check everything after that. Good Luck on the move.

I have moved alot of tractors with the help of Uhaul. First, there are two styles of Uhaul trailer that fit an N

The car carrier is bigger and more expensive to rent; they also have a 6x12' utility trailer with metal sides (2ft high or so) that fits the N nice. The great thing about the utility trailer is you can throw some small implements or parts on the load too. Also if things shift a little you are OK - there are sides on the trailer. If you get the utility trailer, tell em it is a garden tractor.

If you get the car hauler, you cant tell them it is a tractor - against their policy. Tell em it is a Ford model A car.

On the computer the Uhaul guy has to type in what you are carrying - cant skip the field. Definately invest in good straps or adj. chains.

What Steve said.

I was in Uhaul to rent a trailer and the sales person was in a great discussion with a fella who wanted to rent a car hauler to move 1/2 of a Buick. The computer wouldn't let the sales person rent that particular size of hauler because it said the car was too heavy for the car hauler. It is a computer data field that he couldn't override. Just tell the salesman that it is a compact Ford and you can get around the data field.

Just a question - if you tell them you are hauling a car, rather than a tractor. How would this affect your insurance, if you are involved in an accident? Just wondering.

Better have insurance on the actual tractor.
