Gummy Valve Stems?

My 48 N has noisy valves - at least that's what is sounds like. Mostly heard the most when first started but still can heard when engine is warm - fluctuates in intensity sometimes loud - sometimes relatively quiet but usually they can be heard to some degree all the time. Haven't ever adjusted them. Not sure of history before I purchased.

The owners manual sites "gummy valve stems" as a possible cause and says to slowly pour 1/4 pint gum solvent into the carb throught (slowly) while idling.

Anyone ever done this before and would Marvel Mystery Oil or Rislone be good candidate?

Thanks for the help - sure is fun just wish I knew more about the N's.

Paul

I'm with Dell. I had the exact same symptoms with an 8N I bought last fall that had been in starge for a looooo ong time. I changed the oil and replaced one quart with Marvel mystery oil. I also filled the fuel tank and added about 2 pints to the gas. By the time that tank of fuel was ran out, it had shut up the valves and quit smoking, too. I'm pretty sure I had some stuck rings. I changed the oil again before I put it away for the winter. That MMO will really clean the gook out of a crankcase.

Paul..... ...yep, MMO would be my solvent of choice. And yes, intake valve stems do get "gummy" from poor oil maintenance. (change it more often and use quality detergent oil)

Some people take the more "direct" method and pull the valve chest covers behind the intake manifolds and actually spraywash with solvent and scrub with a brush the exposed valve stems. (rotate the engine with fanblades to expose more valve stems)

And while you have the valve covers off, you can check your valve clearances with feeler gauge. Inlet = 0.012" and Exhaust = 0.016" (cold)..... ...Dell

Dell/Joe,

Thanks again. I will post the results when available.
