Today was the last straw. That 8N of mine is leaving this farm, never to return. Anyone interested in a tired 1951 8N in Westminster MD, with a Sherman over/under and a Wagner loader e-mail me.

I'm going to get a tractor that works. I've had enough of this.

I was going to quit drinking beer, then I thought no ones likes a quiter. Thought you could use a little humor. May the ford gods smile upon you in your time of need. Take a deep breath and take a couple of cold ones out to the garage and fix her up. 50 years of service and she is still ready for more. Take care, Paul

Nolan,

Please at least let us know what the trouble is.
It is up to you whether or not you can live with the ups and downs of your 8N.

We all would like to help in any way if we can.

Here we go again.I can't tell you how many times I've listened to a story about the one I used to have or the one that got away.My mom sold a 57 belair sport coupe because of a trans leak. She also gave away a sighned Mickey Mantle baseball card.My grandparents stories made me wish that they never gave anything away.Trust me if you give up on the n it will become "the best tractor I ever had". Or at least the only one you remember.Put it in the barn, throw a tarp over it, leave it in a corner of the field. It won't add up to the price of a new loader. If you let it go you will never be the same, like a piece of you that is missing. After all It won't be the same giving your grandkids a hayride unless the tractor your riding on is part of you,,,just like your 8n

I recon that those of us without a farm who just play with their N's can't really talk. We really don't need our tractors to make a dime. On the other hand I have a little Farmall Cub besides my 8N that can help out some with chores. One thing I can say is that even though these folks have given you some grief over your post, this is truly one of the most active, friendly, and most informative boards I have ever seen. I have tried to read and keep up with the Cub board over on ATIS and it is truly a cruel shadow of this board. These fellas really try to help. Trying to get good info about my cub is next to impossible. Although it might have made you upset I did think the "no crying" picture was pretty !@#$ funny! Look at the bright side, if you get really torqued off you could move to downtown Baltimore and farm on your stoop.

Nolan, sorry to hear about your problems. I hope its just that temporary ticked off thing I have with my N every so often. As I recall you were one of the first to offer advice on my first question to the board, thanks. You may be interested to know that I have now done thing I thought I would never be able to do and my confidence is building. I owe it to guys like you on the board. If you decide on a new mount I still hope you frequent this board, I'd hate to think of those green machine guys getting all your knowlege.

Thanks for the ride,

Nolan,

Has that new tractor driver of yours given you several BAD nights just recently?!??? You sound to me a little someone that has had his patience tested to the "run out" point. You need a "time out!" We would SORELY miss your presence in the "N tractor fraternity".

Old tractors are a little like old cars. You need two. One as "backup to the other. As a guy that is still driving the '71 I got new, I can atest to that need.

I am embarassed to say that even with more than one tractor, last summer I was with out a single running one. The 3000 steering went out and the 8N was having it's sticking valves problem. Both are back "on line" now, but my "lunch" buddy sure had fun giving me a BAD time over it. :-)

I'd say "use this as an excuse to get that second tractor with live PTO and full time hydraulics." Keep the N on grounds that you "won't get much for it anyway" and then slap it back into line this summer at your leasure.

Anxiously awaiting, "the rest of the story!"
Larry

You?, Mr. Now-it-all??, Mr. bookworm???, Mr. Advice???? You can't fix a 8n tractor??, I can't believe what I'm reading !!! Getting pissed yet?, Good !! maybe now you'll get good and mad,put a screw driver in your teeth and attack what ever the problem is instead of sitting here telling us that you've had enough and want to bail out ! You of all people should be able to fix a N series tractor !!

Try again Nolan ! Don't bail out!

Hope this helps!

I agree with dave#1. You're allowed to pout a little, but no crying here!!

After giving it some thought, I've come to the conclusion that quitting is unacceptable. BTW, you didn't really describe your trouble? Are you asking for advice?

My advice to you is to fix it. It will be cheaper to fix your tractor than to buy another one. Have you considered the pros and cons of getting another tractor compared to fixing up yours? Try and find a motivating factor for fixing it and get to it. Many of us wanted to give up many times when fixing our tractors, but you just have to stand back, take a deep breath, and count to ten. Have your wife kick ya in the asstray and fix it when you can find the time. :-)

We're all here to help!

Fix it,
Tyman

Sometimes 90% of the job is having the correct tools. At some point and time a 50 year-old tractor is not "the right tool". Its not the age so much as the features and hp. If you really need a tractor, you have to have something to do the job. Nolan, good luck finding something that fits the bill and is affordable.

I've often had the same feelings, seems every time you need to do something, you got fix something somewhere. When I had my 801 , I thought I should trade both of them for maybe one good tractor, however when I reconsidered, I looked and even with trading both tractors for one, I would not be getting any better than what I had. Take a second look , because unless your are willing to pay 10G , you are not going to gain much better than what you have. My opinion , good luck on what you decide. Stan

It appears you will have to spend a little more money on your N. Keep the N in any case and use it for emergencies. My N was a rusted hulk I found after it had sat in the woods for 15 years. After spending about $2200 and a little work it does everything I ask of it. I am looking for a new project, and it will be a tractor with live pto and maybe a remote, but I will keep the N for the grandkids to ride and learn on. Keep the faith!

Sorry to hear about you and your tractor not getting along. Personally, I have a somewhat emotional attachment to my 2N, and based on the responces I am reading, a lot of other guys do too.

Just last week, my wife and I were driving to the grocery store and I was talking to her about a cooling system leak with my tractor, and how I was tired of always having something to repair on it. Her answer to me was, "but you wouldn't sell it, would you?"

It seems she also developed an emotional attachment to my (our) tractor.

Many a time I have felt the way you do, however it may be a leaky roof problem. A farmer will always curse having to fix a leak in the roof while it is raining, but will forget about the leak when the sun is shining. Right now your tractor's sun is not shining. And if you decide to go with something that has more power, features, safety, and comfort, we will understand.

Good Luck, Ed

Nolan -

The only thing that bothers me about your post is that you know more about these little tractors that most of the rest of us put together.

If you get rid of the N, who'll knock us on the heads and straighten out some of the dumb mistakes we made?

I've always kinda liked your cumudgeonly viewpoint.

Best of luck,

Joey.

If you don't fix it before you sell it you are going to take a beating on price.

If you do fix it then go down to the tractor dealer and see how much they want for a new twenty five horse tractor and you might decide it was a better tractor than you thought.

Nothing can go wrong with an 8N that somebody on this board can't help you fix if you just take enough time to describe the symptoms and what you have done so far.

you can owe me the two cents

Nolan, i know how you feel. Some years ago,i had a 62 Ford Galaxy 500 XL, 2 door hard top with bucket seats, 390 4 barrel, thunderbird engine,(all original equip.) that had 80+ thousand actual miles on it. It ran like a bat outa h_ll, but kept overheating, and started having little things go bad on it. I finally got tired of fooling with it and sold it to a friend for $250.

He's still laughing at me.

I have the same feeling about my old 8n from time to time, but I just bite the bullet and go ahead and fix it when I price a newer one. This has been going on for over 10 years now, I know it aint easy some times, but hang in there . Some times it aint as bad as seems. Good luck .
