Looking back through the posts, I keep seeing the most common post regards 12 volt conversions. I see advocates saying don't go back to a generator, or to 6 volt. Then the next question will be how come it don't work. Now I'm curious, I've converted a few of these N's for neighbors and customers, but never my own. I never could find a good reason to do it. Why have those of you who converted decided to do so? Are you happy? Did it solve your problem? We are a bit different here, we farm with our N's. Sunday's when folks post here braging about some seat time, we brag that the Dang fords didn't have to start all day!
From now til we finish picking corn we will use them almost daily and I never regret keeping it 6 volt. Just wanna know if you are happy with your conversions?
Thanx
Ron

I appreciate the input, although I'm still sitting on the fence, I'm giving some thought to the use of some 12 volt accessories.
Thanx for taking the time for your experiences
Later
Ron

Ron..... ....One of the first things I did to my NAA when I got it was to convert to 12V (with-out knowing how). I ran it for at least a year with it not charging. With the help of the guys here, it is now working perfectly. The knowledge I gained from fixing that problem was worth the aggravation. The 8N had already been converted when I got it. Have not had problem with it but, form causal observation, it looks like the previous owner used a starter relay to de-couple the “tickle” wire to the alternator. If I every have a problem with it, I have no doubt I will know how to fix. Thanks to Dell, and the problem with the NAA, I now know “several ways to do it right the first time”. I use these tractors to work not show and if I got an other one today, I would convert a soon a possible.

Advantages of 12V charging system: faster starting when engine is not tuned perfectly, jump stating from 12V with-out by-passing starter safety inter-lock, using tractor to jump start another vehicles , using 12V spray pump or other 12V equipment, not having to invest in charger with 6V charging capabilities, brighter lights.

Disadvantages of 12V charging system: not original

Thanks E. Ray

I have a 63 4000 that has been converted to 12 volt. It also has electronic ignition. I bought it converted and added the electronic ign. After several years, it is still okay. I am thinking about going back to a 12 volt generator, though, for an original look. I also have a 58 641, 6 volt, that had an electronic ign installed when I bought it. Nothing but trouble. Wouldn't start below 40 degrees without a boost. Installed a new starter thinking old one was pulling too many amps and no difference. New solenoid and new cables didn't help either, neither did plug wires, cap, rotor, and plugs. Couple of weeks ago I had some time to put into it, so went and reconverted it back to points. Works like a dream, starts on the second turn everytime, no matter how cold. Had another guy with a repair shop tell me he has had a lot of trouble with electronic systems conversions also. He has been going back to points quite a bit lately, he says. I talked to a guy at Gennessee recently and he told me that on a six volt system to be used in cold weather conditions, to stay with points.
Have any of you guys had an experience like this?

I converted my 8N several years ago to 12 volt. I wanted an electronic ignition was the main reason I converted. I bought a three wire Delco and a bracket for the alternator. Beyond that I did my own wiring. I never had any trouble starting with the six volt, but like the alternator better as it is more trouble free. Also works better when using lights. I have no desire to go back to the six volt system.
