how many and where do springs go? took brakes apart each side had 3 springs, but each side had 1 spring that was off. kit has 4 springs in package. Do I need 4, 3, or 2 springs.

Assuming stock 8n brakes you need two springs on the right and three on the left. The right doesn't use a retracting spring. At least none is necessary because of the way the brakes self energize.

There should be two spring anchors that fit in slots on the brake shoes on each side. Without looking at the kit you have I would only be guessing which is which. There is a fair diagram in the FO 4 manual. I know it doesn't help much now but before I take drum brakes apart I take poleroid shots of how things go so I don't repeat one of my old mistakes.
