My 47 8N has a high speed wooble on front end. Causes rods to shake. Seems worse on asphalt surface versus grass etc. Any ideas.

Thanks,

PVF

I had that problem on my 48 8N when I first got it. The right side toe in was incredible and the whole tire wobbled badly if I grabbed the top of the front tires and pushed/pulled in and out towards the radiator. I have since adjusted the steering sectors, adjusted the right side drag link, replaced a badly worn bearing on one side, and replaced the spindle arm bushings. This has helped considerably. It is not as hard as you would think to do these repairs/adjustments.

Good luck,
Dan

As was mentioned.. check all the 'outside' parts.. such as tie rod/draglink ends.. wheel bearings, and spindle bushings.

You may also be able to get a little adjustment out of rotating the sector retaining plates... gonna have to pull all those bolts out on either side to see if you can rotate then to a snugger position.

Good luck.

I do recomment an I&T F0-4 manual.. Has pics of all three steering units fron the 9/2/8 n's

Use your foot to put slight pressure on the radius rod where it connects to the steering gear. I use my right leg. It will take all the wobble out while you are driving at full throttle in fourth gear. Try it it works.

Check the toe in on the front wheels, should be 1/4inch toe in. Are the ends on the drag links wore out? That'll cause a lotta shakin goin on too. Keep her under 50 mph, that'l help LOL

Hope this helps Good luck

One more thing,ya might check the front wheel bearing adjustment. Loose bearingg kin cause some wobble.

Get an FO-4 I&T shop manual and see about adjusting the steering gears.

My 48 8N has been doing that for years. Early 8Ns had a lousy steering mechanism. Yep, it's actually worse on pavement. You've got a little job ahead of you to rectify it. I just drive a little slower. You may try adjusting the tie rods just a bit so that they are working against each other. I know it's not right but, it beats tearing the whole steering mechanism apart after a new paint job. Good Luck.
