Our black lab will follow, or walk along side of my tractor as i'm plowing, bushhoggin, or scraping the driveway. He'll stay within 4 feet of the tractor or whatever implement i'm using. I have to be very careful not to hit him while turning with the bushhogg, or discs on. He seems fasinated by either the tractor or what i'm doing on it. Anybody else out there have a dog that does this?

I have to think that on The Eighth Day, following a good rest, and having given it lots of thought, God made dogs that following Monday. Cats, well they're with the rest of the beasts of the field. Only one animal could be special enough to be Man's Best Friend.

My vision of Heaven is the collective shared joy of all humanity...and dogs everywhere!

I don't take any chances with my dog or any kids that are around , I just tell go on get out of here and chase them away. It's too easy to not be able to read their prediction of what they are going to do. Safety first.

I also have a black lab that wont let me out of his site. I've had him since he was about 2 yr old he will stay with me in the shop all day, wont walk in grease or oil, or drink antifreeze, wont let the horses through the gate when I go through with the truck or tractor. when I use the tractor around the place he just runs himself stupid, I have to laughf at him, he aint got a care in the world. He's also wicked protective, one day a guy drove in intending to do me great bodly harm, he stopped thou when he looked down and saw 65lbs. of brissled hair, snarling white teeth, and a look that said, go ahead, make my day. Love my dog.

One day a freind and myself were headed out to the back forty to cut some cord wood.My dog Wilbur was running along side the ford f350 mason's dump when he slipped under the rear tires. A crushed pelvis 8weeks in a tiny cage and an astronomical vet bill later,he's still with us,doing his job as head of security. He's half shepard and half norweigan(sp?) elkhound. No he doesn't chase along side anymore but he hates that truck, all diesels including mine.

An old trick my uncle taught me about dogs that chase cars, etc. Get an old burlap sack, pull the hubcap off, stick the sack under and put the sack back on..Drive slow, dog will chase the tires trying to bite, gets his teeth caught up, cant get lose..spin him a few times. He will stop chasing. Better than gettin run over.

That will probably work sometimes, but you might just teach the dog not to bite burlap, or pull/break a tooth. I have heard of all kinds of methods including sling shots, BB guns, long lines, owner jumping out of the vehicle to punish the dog, etc. I prefer to use an electronic collar to teach dogs not to chase vehicles. Granted that you can't let the dog get "collar wise".

FWIW - I keep the dogs locked up while the tractor is running.

My Uncle had a White shepard that got in front of a sickle bar and it cost a foot. Gotta watch dogs around machinery. I worked at a lumber yard for a while , there was a dog across the road use to show up every morning and ride on the hood of one of the forklifts all day long. That dog had better attendance than some of the employees.

I have a miniture pincher ( well that's almost a dog ) But he will follow behind the tractor when I blade the drive way. When I turn around she gets behind the tractor again and follows.

When I open the door on my truck the dog thinks she has to be inside. Even if I start the truck to go to work she has to jump up in the truck with her hind feet on the see and her front feet on the dash. Then I say lets go to the house. Then it's out of the truck and on the back porch.

I can't get to far out of her sight, I guess she thinks she'll miss something.

She's worthless but I guess she's a Keeper.

I use my dogs to pull my tractor out of the snowbank. Otherwise, if they're not working, they are lazing around.

Same with this here old hound dog, gotta pen him up when mowing or hogging. I drive a little turf truck around here like they use on golf courses and if he ain't in the back he tries to run in front to "lead the way". More than once I've had to slam on the brakes when he spots a critter of some kind to chase and suddenly changes direction on me. Loves to sit in or near the shop when I work too, if I could only teach to turn a wrench.:-)

My black lab would do the same thing until she got tired then she would find a spot that she could watch me closely. This is nothing more that the dog wanting to be with you. My lab, Sarah died about 3 months ago at the age of 12. She was great.

Pen him! I , too, have seen a few three legged farm dogs, and deer. When I was growing up, few years back, 'cutter bar' mowers were the mower of choice. They were a disaster for animals. fwiw, ray

My chocolate Lab does the same thing. When she was a smaller pup, she would actually ride on the tractor with me!! She would straddle the transmission, her front feet on the right running board, her rear feet on the left, standing under my legs. She would ride like this until the entire yard was mowed! Now that she's full grown, it just doesn't work anymore, but she still will ride in the trailer when I'm hauling firewood. Great fun...it's true, Man's Best Friend!!

When I was cutting hay with the sickle mower my purebred black lab was with me catching field mice, until the enevitable happened he got one just in time for the mower to catch him. we saved the leg but it is not good for much any more alot of athritest and he has a side winding twist to his walk any more. He is a great companion and his leg has been this way for about seven years now and at thirteen it really slows him down I really ruined him. And i bet the cold hurts him but he won't say it in his eyes. My advise is Kennel him up when working with this equipment! it hurts me now. I had to learn the hard way and i really try hard to teach the kids safety all i have to do is point at the dog and say see what will happen. Enough said.

Your tire bill must really be high. Does he chew the cheaper front tires, or both ends?

My German Shepherd is wherever I am. When I sandblast, she lies down a safe distance and watches the whole process. She loves a truck or tractor and knows how to stay out of the way.

Dogs and trucks seem to go together naturally. My dog loves to ride in the truck and is kind of neutral about the tractor (she loves rabbits, too, but in a different way).

my old doberman will sit and watch me work back and forth on either tractor. she picks out a spot about mid way in the field and sits and you can watch her follow with her head.

just wants to be near me I guess or maybe keeping an eye on me.

Redbelly1--I believe it is that great bond between dog and master, your close to home, they want to be with you. You get close to your pets and never want to harm them but they would never want to see you harmed either. In many cases they ARE you best friend. Many, many people have the same things happen to them so you just have to be careful. Enjoy them while you have them. luckydog

I have three dogs and they all follow/get in front of at some point. I have run over the black lab-luckily it was down the middle of the tractor and I stopped before the rears reached her. She ran out the side of the tractor. Now she doesn't walk in front anymore-no damage luckily. I also had a beagle/dashhund (sp?) mix that was getting old and used to get too close. Ran her over with the back tire but miraculously her legs were in the spaces between the tire lugs and she was undamaged, limped for a couple of hours but never stopped running. I watch for them as much as possible but they always get too close until they get hit. Luckily no body has been hurt but it scares the h**l out of me, especially the above two incidents.
