Took off the left housing to replace the right lower link pin. The sumps were fairly clean. When I looked at the ring gear it had most of one tooth missing,(the out side third of tooth is still there and looks ok) carrier bearings worn some and the pinion bearing that I can see is worn out. What will cause over half a tooth to bust off like this. It was not makeing any loud noise when it was being used.Oh well always some fun to be had, just wish it was not so costly.

Lots of things can go wrong. I pulled mine apart last year and found bad bearings in the differential too. I did my rebuild because of a broken pinion gear after I was dumb enough to pop the clutch when trying to pull a stump.

I was lucky and didn't have any damage other than that. I got an extra ring gear just in case but I never used it. If you decide to replace that gear I can help.

You will find all kinds of weird stuff in old tractors. I had one with a broken final drive gear and when I tore it down I found several other teeth in the belly that didn't belong there, they didn't come off the broken gear.Someone ghanged the broken gears but didn't clean out the debris, that led to a tooth getting in the new gears and taking them out. Lots of times you take out the drain plug and hear a thud as the oil runs out.

You know, when we inspect things, it can git scary. Maybe just take care of the immediate problem and plan on doing more, later, slowly. There is always something to do, to keep mechanical equipment like new.

If the tractor has been working ok, chances are it will keep working but would appreciate more TLC later, at your convenience.

John,PA
