The big external spring on the lift is the draft control spring. Basically, it balances a load on the yoke that the toplink connects to. Since the lower arms are rigid, the weight of the implement tries to yank the toplink out of the tractor when the implement is raised up. When you push up on the implement, it tries to compress that spring.

The yoke actually feeds back through the lift cover and will actuate the control valve in the pump if it moves. It is designed such that when the implement gets pulled down into the ground too much, the lift will try to raise it back up. If the implement tries to ride across the top of the soil, the lift will lower a bit to let it sink back down. This is called Draft control because it maintains a constant amount of drag or draft on the implement. Basically used for plowing and other soil tillage equipment.
