Was the Ford 2N always the color grey or were they red/grey at one time. Mine before I repainted it was orginally red/grey (My grandfather said that it was always red/grey from the day they got it.) I repainted to red/grey but I am confused as to what color it is supposed to be. Everyone says 2N's are all grey. Some people post pics of 2N's and they are red/grey. I have a classic tractor book, which has a picture of a Ford 2N being the same red/grey color scheme as mine.

Neglected to mention that my 2N was red and gray when I got it.

This is a question that seems to be taking too much effort and time for people to answer. Just check some of the Ford N reference books....
The short and only answer is that they were painted gray (no red.) See Jeb's below. I clearly remember my grandfather's 46 N the day it was delivered and it was all gray and I've never seen and N painted any other original color than gray. One Ford book I read said that the red and gray scheme came into being when dealers took in 9N's and 2N's on trades toward the beginning of the 8N model run. Then the dealers repainted them with red and gray to make them look more like 8N's. This was done because of the Ferguson lawsuit and that's too much to go into now. But the answer is gray--Paint an N whatever color your heart desires but 9N's and 2N's were ALWAYS gray when they left the factory.

Another reason given for the change of color on the 8N's (in additon to the legal reasons) was that bird and pigeon poop didn't show up as much on tractors parkded in barns or sheds that were inhabited by birds..

Well, since nobody else posted one of an all gray 2N or 9N, i guess I will. This is Jason Grooms' 2N painted correctly. As to why some were painted red/gray, when the newer model 8N came out, it was red/lite gray. A lot of people liked the color scheme better, so some dealers repainted the older tractors to match to help them sell. Other people painted them the same just cuz they like the colors.

I actually think the 2N and 9N look better in all gray and the 8N looks best in red/gray. I have seen one all gray 8N, but I don't think I have a picture of it. I have even seen 9/2/8Ns painted blue to look like the 1000 series fords. Like they say, paint it how you want, i just prefer to paint mine in the original colors.

You say that the tractor was bought that way..I have heard that some dealers painted them red/gray near the turn of the model year..This way they could sell the remaining 2N's that they had..

All 9N/2N's were GRAY..

I thought someone might enjoy this picture of my old 1947 Ford 2N with 2 bottom Dearborn plow. It was enjoying a nice summer afternoon. The flags add a nice touch.

This is my first tractor. I've been working on it and got it running real good. Bought some new implements and have been doing small jobs with it around our property.

Here's my 2N. Yes I know it's the wrong color. It was this color when I bought it but was in really bad shape. Took it apart 1 day to find a leak and replaced waterpump, decided to paint that, then the motor looked bad, painted that and well 6 months later after replacing most of the tractor here it is. It's going to be all gray one of these days!

I painted my 2N red/gray because I like the color scheme. If anyone can't look at my tractor and not know it's a 2N they probably don't know what an 8N is either.
Unless your a purist and want your machine to look exactly like it did when it rolled off the assembly line you can paint it pink if ya want. It's yours to do as you please.
Battleship gray was the orginal color and if you paint it that color no one will think your trying to make it look like the USS Missouri.

I'm not concerned about the color that I painted my tractor. I am just confused over the color scheme and everyones input. This 2N of mine was bought red/grey according to my grandfather. Everyone says that they were originally all grey. Thats nice, but why was mine red/grey.

The 9 and 2ns were grey only. A lot of people painted them red/grey to make them look like 8ns. I have never seen a photo of an 8n painted all grey. Has anybody else?

Was told by a ford dealer mechanic from yesteryear that red and grey was correct but looking up colors in ford dearborn archives says they were all grey because henry was cheap during war and didn't want to spend money on colors. Ask Dell, saw a post where he told some girl it was all grey but she could paint her tractor any color she wants cause its her tractor.

Hey, I was told that Henry had stock piles of the dark grey paint. He painted all the machinary in the plant this color. Then when the 9N started in production he just used the excess dark grey he had on hand!!! Everything was GREY..... :^)
