Carb Advice Needed - 8N

Need carburator fix advice on 48-8N. I've read about the electrical problems maskerading as carb problems but think this may actually be a carb problem - I'll try to explain.

HISTORY: Bought tractor 4 yrs ago. The man I bought it from purchased and installed a brand new carb ($200) because he thought the original carb was bad (it was gunk in the tank). From the time I bought it I've had to run with the choke half way out and it will run fairly smooth. With choke in it will stumble and die at low idle immediately and barely run at high idle.

Four years ago I took the carb apart and blew out all ports with carb cleaner (carb was 3 weeks old and appeared spotless) but absolutely no change or improvement. I checked for manifold leaks by spraying WD40 around carb and manifold - no change. Checked and reset timing - no change. Finally I gave up.

Help/Questions:
Ok so now I have the carb off again because I've got to get it fixed proper.

1. The carb #on stamp is: RE-TSX241B / RE-8N9510C. Is this a Marvel Schebler carb?

2. The cast housign and parts on the carb all seem to be outstanding quality and workmanship and the carb still is really clean internally. Should I soak in general carb cleaner over night and then flush the passages out just incase their is some unsean spec causing this grief?

3. Are the jets in the carb changeable - would this explain the extreme lean condition if someone had smaller jets installed?

4. Do you agree that this is a carb problem if 1/2 choke can create a rich enough mixture to get fairly smooth low idle and high idle? 5. Any other advice?

Thanks so much for your help - I really want to get this running correctly - hard to really enjoy it in this condition.

Paul

I am getting pretty good at these carbs, I have fixed the M/S 241B on my 48 8N twice, and just bought another off eBay cheap and am rebuilding it. I don't think you have an original Marvel Shebler carb. If you did, the TSX 241B model had "MARVEL SCHEBLER" stamped around the collar of the intake. I posted a pic of it in the Parts and Pieces section of the wedsite. Make sure the correct jets are in the correct spot as Dell says, I had that problem with mine also. Here is a link to this pic:

Good luck,
Dan

Paul..... ...gonna assume that you know how to adjust the M/S carb. Down pointing mainjet to 1-1/2 turns and leevitt. Sidepointing idle mixture is bassackwards, out for lean, in for enrich. Start at 1 turn and screw in for max rpms, not smoothest running, MAX rpms, OK? Idle speed is a very SLOOooow 400 rpms set by the behind carb throttle setscrew.

To answer yer question, YES, RE-TSX241B / RE-8N9510C is the "infamous Marvel/Schebler carb" designed for the 8N Ford tractor engine.

And yes, it is very possible that someone has crossed the idlejet (0.024") and mainjet (#49 drill = 0.074") they are both same screwsize and mechanically interchangeable. Use a 1/16" (0.0625") drill bit as a go/nogo gauge.

I'm gonna assume you know whichR and whereR the jetsR.

And yes, very possible that the idle jet is "clogged" which would cause lean-runnin' that you are semi-correcting by using yer choke to enrich the fuel mixture.

CAUTION: use "gun-smithing" type screwdrivers to remove the brass jets. Gunsmithing screwdriver blades are precision "hollow-ground" or straight-sided (NOT WEDGE shape) Use a 1/4 drive 3/8" DEEP SOCKET to remove the mainjet slanted emulsifier tube for access to mainjet..... ....Dell

He stated a "brand new carb" but it may have been a new rebuilt carb. And yes the rebuild kits come with a varity of jet seats. I was lucky since mine must have had the original seats so I just matched their size. Although my carb is the "33" model I would expect the same is true for yours.
Others will have the proper size seat sizes for you I am sure so you can check. Also check the float setting to be sure it is letting the gas get into the carb. I am sure you have already checked the three filters, one in the tank, one in the bowl and one at the elbow of the carb. Pulling the drain at the bottom of the carb would confirm that you have proper fuel flow.
Good Luck, Dave OH
