I am changing the rear axle bearings on my 52 8n. Can anyone tell me how it comes off the axle? Also I haven't looked yet , but are the numbers on the bearing? If not, what number bearing does the axle take? The number on the outer race is Bower 3720. Is the bearing the same number? And last but not least, Where can I get it? Need Two Thanks In Advance, Rich

Well, Dell is right about the hub wobble. If the splines are worn till it bottomed out, then it wobbles and eats up the seal and you get a leak. Anyhow, the hub is about $75 at the NH dealer. I did this last summer on a neighbor ladys 8N. The bearing was galled and so I fugured I'd change it. Got it from the NH dealer too. I figured its pressed on and they probably had a press, bearing adapters, etc. its a big, busy shop. So I told the shop manager I'd pay shop rate to get the bearing swapped. Lo and behold, the biggest guy in the shop takes it to a huge vise, clamps the axle in and procedes to take a chisel and huge hammer and patiently worked his way around it slowly driving it off. The new one practically slipped on, with just a litte tapping of a mallet.

Rich..... ...RUsure you need new rear axle bearings for your 8N? Usually its the tapered rearaxle HUB that wears its splines giving the false impression that the bearings are "loose". Shake the rear tire sidewize and watch yer BIG axle nut.

Remember that BIG NUT is torqued to 450 ft/lbs so ya gotta un-loosen it B4 you jack-up yer tractor to remove the rear wheels which can weigh upto 450 lbs. Gitt outta the way if'n the tire starts to fall.

Bearings are "kinda standard", and usually have the bearing manufacturer number engraved on the non-load surfaces. I don't have cross-references to the N-Ford MPC part numbers of 2N4221 cone and roller assy, axle shaft bearing; and 2N4222 cup, axle shaft bearing.

It should be intutitively obvious that you should replace all your rearaxle SEALS.

Consult your I&T FO-4 manual ($27 cheap) for correct "shimming" procedures to set your bearing clearances..... ...respectfully, Dell

Dell Thanx, Yes I do need to replace the bearings, The are in the worst condition of any bearings I have seen. There is not a square millimeter of original surface left on either the bearings or the race. Rust and corrosion, not wear. Both the nearings and the hubs were loose and shook more than I feel a wheel should shake. Worst of all, I could hear metal to metal sounds as the tractor moved. I've got the axle apart, Now how does one take the the bearingoff the axle? My manual gives a procedure for 9Nand2Ns There seems to be a difference in the 8N. Thanks , Rich
