My 8N starts but dies in about 10 sec. Seems to be a fuel broblem. I chceked the fuel flow to carb and it seems to be ok. I also noted that if I leave the fuel valve open that within a few minutes fuel will run out of the carb.any advice?

"if I leave the fuel valve open that within a few minutes fuel will run out of the carb"

Forget the cause of the stuck float for a minute...If you had good flow to the carb, with a stuck open float, it would take a lot less than a few minutes to have gas pouring outta the carb.

Sounds to me like a couple things are wrong. 1.) Your carb needs to be cleaned/rebuilt. 2.) Clean all 3 of your fuel screens...The one in the tank, & the other two at the carb. 3.) Like Soundguy says, the problem could be electrical. Have you checked anything (ignition switch, points, coil) with a multi-tester yet ?

You're kinda sparse with info, but I'm gonna bet on crap in your tank, fuel screens & carb. Let us know how you make out.

Checking fuel 'to' the carb is good.. checking it 'thru' the carb is better. Remove the bottom plug to see if you are getting a steady flow of gas. Let is run into a jar.. make sure the it doesn't taper off. With the gas in the jar check for water and trash...

Gas shouldn't run out of the carb.. if it does it sounds like a float problem.. or trash under the needle.. not letting the gas shutoff.

That may be part of your problem.

Sounds like a carb cleaning is in your future. At least then you could rule that out.

There are other time related failures.. not sure where 10 seconds falls.. but Dell would know.... Might not be long enough time for a bad capacitor to do it.. but I'll leave that to Dell to comment on.

Thanks guys, for the info. I did the flow thru the carb check and found out that there was only a very small dribble. As it turned out the float was tight against the needle valve restricting all but a little fuel. I guess the engine ran as long as there was fuel in the bowl, then died.

Thanks

Glad you found the problem.. Good luck on the repair... not sure if you can 'adjust' it a bit to keep it from sticking.. or if you have to get a new float.
