New USA Made Cast Iron Carb Report

A few weeks ago, I posted a request for info on the new "USA made cast iron carbs." One person responded with some info which seemed relatively positive so I bought one. Since they are new, I wanted to share my experience with it in the event that others may consider the purchase of one. I purchased it from one of the mail order catalogs. It arrived in a box labeled "Hershell-Adams." The carb itself had no indication of the manufacturer, at least that I could see. I searched for "Hershell-Adams" on the web and found that they make all sorts of ag equipment, including tractor carbs. So, I'm guessing they made it. I don't know why they would not place their name on the carb. Anyway, the carb looks well-made from the outside. With the carb, my 8N runs well (although the engine is rebuilt and everything is "new"). The engine quickly accelerates with virtually no hesitation and runs smooth; however, I have not been able to achieve a smooth idle below 500 rpm. Also, there seems to be a dead area with the idle adjustment needle. It sometimes requires about one half turn before I can detect a difference in the engine. Accept for the inability to achieve 400 rpms, I'm happy with the carb. Unfortunately, I'm new at this tractor restoration stuff so I can't provide a comparison to a well-rebuilt original carb.

Does your carb have an aluminum plate attached to the bolts with the model #. Mine sounds about like yours - cast iron and very high quality. It has RE-TSX241B / RE-8N9510C on the aluminum plate. The person I bought the tractor from bought it about 4 years ago - but I would like to know who makes it.

Can you post a picture or any other identifying info?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

Yes, my carb does have the aluminum plate attached to one of the bolts. It also has the exact same numbers you referenced as well - both sets of numbers are the same. Must be the same carb. I have not been able to post a picture yet; I'm working on it though.

I can't get 400 rpm either.. 5XX is best I can do.. on my old carb... Sounds like that one is at least 'decent'.
Thanks for the report.
