Ray..... ...believe it or not, that ol' N-Engine will kinda run with mis-wired spark plug wires. Firing order should be 1,2,4,3 CCW, wheather a frontmount or a sidemount distributor. Thats what I'd check first for mis-firing, especially considering that you removed the distributor..... .Dell

I agree with Dell. Also make sure you got the distributor back in exactly and have it timed right. If you're 100% sure that it's wired right and timed right AND the carb is delivering the correct amount of fuel, the other probable cause would be problems in the valve train:weak or broken springs, burned valve, misadjustment, sticking valves, etc. But that's a long shot. The timing/firing order/carb adjustment are easier to check and fix, and where I'd start.

Hi ray, Under what conditions does the engine miss and backfire? Are the cap, rotor and plug wires ok? Are you sure the plug wires are on correctly? Any one of these things could easily be causiong your problem. Without more information I'm not ruling out the carb., but ignition problems are much more common than fuel problems, and so far this sounds like ignition...Al English
