Hi folks, I just picked up a New Holland tune-up kit for the 8N (part number 309787). Also picked up some plug wires (p/n 8N 12259). I asked if they were copper and they said they don't carry copper wires. Got a ditributor cap too (p/n NCA-12106A).

Just wondering, are there varying grades of tune-up kits, plugs wires, dist caps, etc. Am I getting the best parts at my local dealer or is there a better place to shop for these items?

TIA

Rusty -- Yes, there are varying grades of everything available. No, buying your parts at your local dealer is NOT a guarantee of getting the best parts available, or even parts approved by Ford. To find the best parts you are going to have to start looking around at what's available in your area and pick and choose. Many of the places will handle parts etc. made by exactly the same manufacturers, including your NH dealer. For example, last week I started looking around for a complete engine rebuild kit for my 8N. (I had already priced on this web site) This web site offers it for about $400 + S&H, my local Ag. store was asking about $440 + tax, and my local New Holland Dealer wanted over $500 + tax. Now, this was for EXACTLY the same rebuild kit, same parts, same manufacturer, and even being ordered from the same supplier. It is an after-market kit made up of parts from all over, (not all USA). In talking to the different parts guys they all said that it is almost impossible to find anything else. I'd like to find US parts and would be willing to pay more to use them but since there's only one choice I see no reason to pay more for it than I have to. Also, just like you discovered NHolland doesn't even have available a lot of the parts for your Ford that are commonly offered by the other sources. Example: NH doesn't have the brushes and rebuild parts for the starter and generator -- but NAPA does. NH does still offer brake rebuild parts but are asking as much for one wheel kits as you would pay for both wheels on this site. So, it's worth your time to do a little research. One last note and I'll quit spouting. If you get a bad part don't just replace it and toss it under the bench TAKE IT BACK -- That's the only way they'll find out that their supplier is pushing junk.
Just my $1.29's worth. --Cap--

Your dealer must not want to look stuff up for you, NH sells aftermarket style rebuild kits and original quality Ford rebuild kits, they also carry the starter and generator brushes, your dealer may also sell Tisco or another aftermarket brand and you thought it was NH.

Scott -- Can't answer why my dealer can't or doesn't get all the "Genuine" Ford parts that you are able to. You are aware that there is a company named "Genuine" that sells Genuine ford parts, Genuine Chevorlet parts etc. ?? Are you sure of what you are getting?? The Dealer I'm going to (Adams Tractor) has been a Ford, one family owned, dealership since the 30's, is very knowledgeable about the Ford "N" series tractors, owns an 8N that they restored and show, they have older parts men that can quote you the "N" part numbers off the top of their heads (and yes, they have computers too) and since there are a lot of the old "N"s still being worked up here they stock a lot of parts for them. I've been buying Ford parts from them since the late 40's. I know the family and their parts men on a first name basis. Don't really think it was a matter of their not being willing to look up a number or misrepresenting what they had to sell. Maybe the Ford stagecoach doesn't always run this far West. Seriously, I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be willing to order/sell any real USA made Ford parts if they could get them. They always have in the past. It's been their business for a long time.

I'll check here for you next time they tell you NH (Ford) doesn't sell it anymore and let you know, thanks, Scott.

Packard 440 and then Delco Packard 440 once upon a time was a the hot set up for solid core wires. I have not purchased any in quite some time but any old parts guy should know what you are talking about if you ask. I did find Packard 440 in a search supplied for English motorcycles so some body might have it.

TSC carries universal 4cyl, 6cyl, and 8cyl copper core wire sets with extra brass ends and extra rubber boots.. less than 19 bucks.

I doubt you will be happy with supressor core wires.

Yes.. some tune up kits do vary.. have heard problems with cheapy points... and distribuitor cap fit.. caps also.. but then.. that can happen in anyones kit.

If it were me, and my dealer didn't carry copper or SS wires, I'd a come home without them. Any decent auto parts, or performance shop will have them.
I bought my roll of copper core at NAPA, at the same time, they got me a box of 100 each wire ends. The good stiff ones, not the wimpy ones that come with the fits all kits.
