Dell, I presume the (WA) after your name means that you are in Washington State somewhere?
If so, what part?

ps: What's up with the knothead who thinks you use "Intuitive" too much? I see that you had the good sense to ignore him.

Sheesh! I didn't realize I would start such an interesting line of chat with such a simple question ! I am the Medical Attache' posted with the Department of State at our Embassy in Quito Ecuador. I lived in Washington state for many years (Spokane, Walla Walla, Bellingham and Seattle) and recently bought a '52 8N from a gent in Shelton (just to get back on topic here). I will haul it over to a place I have in Montana where it will see duty maintaining my driveway and whatever other chores I can find to use it for on my not-as-frequent-as-I-would-like visits "home".

I don't know a lot about tractors so appreciate the great advice you and soundguy and others offer up on this site. I am hoping that if I keep reading all of the postings that when my N stops chugging along I will be able to do something about it besides scratch my head and look mystified.

ps. I was driving through southern Peru (Lima to Nazca) a few weeks ago and noticed that ALL the tractors I saw were Massey-Fergusons. Must have a good foreign sales program!

Dell,

Boeing does indeed produce superb aircraft.
I work on the KC-135R model here in Ohio.
We have four airframes which are 1957 models, and our newest is a 1964.
Did you ever work on the 135 project?
In my (very rare) spare time, I crew on the Commemorative Air Force B-29 "Fifi".
She was built at Renton in July, 1945. I think Boeing has given the taxpayer the most "value" for the money with the KC-135 and B-52.
My thanks to you and your fellow Boeing employees and sub-contractors for producing such outstanding machines.

Mark..... ...My first Boeing job was flight flutter testing of the 707-QT re-engined with CFM-56's. Which proved to the Military, the value of modern hi-bypass commercial jet engines for the KC-135R program. I also flew test instrumentation on E3A AWACS, Navy E6B Comm, 737-400 with the flattened nacelle CFM-56. (its flattened on bottom so engine doesn't drag on ground if front nosegear collapses) Boeing thinks of everything. (grin)

I also flew test against the ARIA C-135A's (with jimmey durante drouped nose) for Appolo Spacecraft flight to moon in 1967/8. The nose had an 8' radar dish inside. The Appolo electronics genereated so much heat that they used the fuel in wings as radiator heat-sinks. The heated jet-fuel gave more thrust and mpg than regular fuel. And the US got men to the moon first..... ...Dell

Dell,
WOW! It sounds like you worked on a number of very interesting projects.
The CFM-56 mod has really added new capability to our refuelers, especially when compared to the old J-57 powered KC-135A.
Unfortunately, our airframes are getting a little tired, and corrosion is becoming a problem.

KC-135Link:

The ARIA/Apollo C-135 is something I know very little about.

Boeing's contribution to getting to the Moon is perhaps much greater than most people realize.
Boeing also built the Saturn V rocket's S1-C first stage which produced 7,500,000 pounds of thrust.
That's about 180 million horsepower!
Lastly, Boeing's 5 Lunar Orbiter spacecraft did all of the high-resolution photo-mapping of the six Apollo landing sites.
We couldn't have gotten there without them.

Mark..... ..Boeing also built the Apollo luner jeep with spring steel tires instead of rubber used on the last couple of Apollo landings.

Your KC-135 airframe corrosion problem is WHY the AirForce NEEDS the twin engined Boeing 767 TANKER that the politians keep gittin their tails innna knott over. 'course the AF tried to do it on the cheap with an end-around "lease/purchase" scheme to by-pass politically inspired restrictive military procurement laws designed to prevent "profitteering", (yeah, right, think pork barreling)..... ..Dell

Mark, congrats to you and all the folks that fly Fifi, as well as all of the old warbirds. I go to see Fifi every time she is w/ in 100 miles of me. About 10 years ago, Fifi was here in Richmond; I always make sure to be around for take off. As she sat at the end of the runway, the tower asked the pilot "B-29, do you need a run-up?" You could hear the pilot laughing when he replied "Yep, sonny, I sure do!"

Bruce(VA),
Thanks for your kind words.
Travelling with the B-29 has truly been a great experience.
I've been with them since 1978, and it has allowed me to meet the "Real America".
Great people out there in the heartland!

I went through Ft Lewis WA on the way to Vietnam, Sept 1969. Beautiful country, reminded me of New England with the fir trees, rocks & lakes. Rained a lot....I think the sun came out once in the 10 days I was there & we got a view of Mt Rainier!

Dell, I'm an avid fan of Boeing. You people have turned out some great machines. I'm currently beta testing a flight simulator program "Ready For Pushback 747-200. As far as I'm concerned their is not a better company than Boeing. I'm retired from the U.S. Air Force and spent my 20 years working with Jet Fighters. Dell, you are my hero today.
