Why am I not getting spark to my plug wires? New points and plug wires, rotary, distributor cap, and new coil.
It's raining and I would like to get somewhere on this thing today.

I have a 1949 8N also. I have had this problem as well. The first thing to check is to make sure you have voltage to coil. If not trace the wiring back with a volt meter to find problem. If you have voltage to the coil you may want to check the coil springs to ensure they make good contact. If none of that is a problem pull the distributor out and check the points with an ohm meter. You may have a short in the points wiring. I have had all the above.

Do you maybe have a diagram of the distributor? or the way the distributor connects to the points?
What does the spring coming out of the coil hook to?

Ray..... ...did you remember to "gently stretch" your squarecan frontmount coil's "springy-thingy" for shure contact? The springy-thingy feeds power to the distributor points.

New frontmount ignition points are known for slipping closed after installing. Usual cause is wornout #8 X 3/16" points tighening screw. (p/n 355047-S7) Most hardware stores don't carry this short screw but your local FORD AUTO dealer parts counter does..... ...Dell

There is a spring thing in the front - I know about that one. Then there is a coiled stiff wire coming out the back. What does that connect to - there is fire coming out of that wire.
Also, where does that copper band that goes to the points connect to?

Ray..... ...your condensor wire connects to a screw bracket at 12 o'clock, and it should be intutitively obvious that the points copper strip should connect to the other bracket at 1 o'clock.

Un-snap your squarecan coil wire bail and gently lift the coil to inspect that your 2-coil contacts are infact making contact thru the distributor housing..... .....Dell

Dell,
Is there a wire connected from the coil to the points? I don't see how the points spark the plugs.
Thank you for your time.

Ray..... ...there is NO wire from the coil to the points.

The way the squarecan coil MOUNTS on top the distributor with 2-plug-in terminals is how power is passed (springy-thingy) to the ignition points thru the sheetmetal flatspring conductor; and how sparkies (tab) are passed to the rotor center terminal thru the distributor cap to be rotationally switched to each indivual sparkie nipple at the appropriate time.

You doubt? Un-snap yer coil wire bail and lookie-look at bottom of squarecan coil..... ...respectfully, Dell

Dell,
Thank you. I am not too familiar with my tractor yet, but I'm sure I'll be gettin that way!
I appreciate your patience with me, and I also appreciate your ability to bring it down to layman's terms.
Ray

Go to nseries.com and look on the left of the page. There are wiring diagrams and tune up spec. Hope this helps.
