Stupid blankety-blank tractor.

It needs the engine rebuilt. That's the long and the short of it. I should never have pulled the head a few months ago to decarbon it and examine things. It probably would have continued to run for years that way. But since it knows that I know just how incredibly worn the cylinder sleeves are, it's simply given up running. I've never seen a set of bores worn like this and an engine still running. God only knows what the crankshaft and such look like. I'll hope for the best, but expect the worst.

That still leaves me a lousy lift, a really worn front end, and quite a bit of rust to fix. But my tires are very good, and the rusty sheet metal is straight.

I can afford to put the tractor up this summer and do the job. All the bull work around the place has been done, so I can go a year without a tractor. And if I do need one, I've got three neighbors I can cajol into helping me.

So I've got to fix the tractor. Add that to the list of projects this summer that need to be done. Dang but that's become a long list. Largely my own fault. I've got this thing for buying broken down treasures, and having to spend more time and money limping them along then buying something decent in the first place. And that's a large portion of the straw that broke the camels back on this one for me.

When it's all said and done, even when the 8N is running, I'm still fighting its limitations for working. Size isn't the issue, the hydraulics and pto are though. Gearing isn't fun, and the lack of a differential lock bites. A nice 2000 series tractor would sure work a lot better. 4wd would also be sweet, but that sure gets expensive fast.

So the N is for sale, but I doubt it's going to be going anywhere any time soon. Check back with me in a year or two, and I'll probably still have it.

And even when I do sell it, I'll hang around this board. I really like it hear. It's a lot of fun. Believe me, being a part of this sort of fraternity has been the major reason for me keeping the N so far.

Cut the ridge out of the top of the cylinders, pull the pistons out, install new rings, and let it rip.!!!! Always good for another 100 hours!! (My old N had chunks of metal missing out of the sleeves but oddly all the crank and camshaft needed was polished. You might get lucky.)

Nolan,

I don't know how big your spread is, but when I added some 50+ acres to my place I knew I needed a bigger tractor than an N. That is how I came to get my Ford 3000. Excellent choice! That 10hp and 1000# more is a BIG difference, PLUS the full time hydraulics and live PTO. ONLY thing I wish I had was differential lock!

HOWEVER, they are pricy! Think that is because there are not too many of them being sold. They are big enough for the "real" farmers to use for hay raking and other utility work. If you are patent you probably can find one. I would advise you to hold out for the eight speed transmission and differential lock. The three cylinder 2000 is just a "de-rated" 3000, for the most part.

Can you get "The Valley Trader" up your way. It is mostly Shenandoah Vally (Virginia) but covers the adjecent WVa., MD. and even lower PA counties. That is where I found the LCG2000 I bought in '99. I see a lot of N's in it, some NAA's and hundred series also. Might be you can find something in there. I also had someone bring me an eastern shore paper several years ago. Had lots of farm equipment in it and included some 3000's.

Good luck one your search - especially finding something "within the budget" :-)

My 3000 and 8N make a good pair, as you can see in photo at link below. So far most of my work has been close to the barn yard, so I can easily walk back to get the second tractor. BUT I have woods that are across a creek and as much as a half a mile from the barn. Too far to walk, twice! so I can have both tractor at a work site in the woods. SOoo, I have been thinking of making a "tow bar" for the 8N. Then I could pull it out with the 3000 so I'd have both where I need them with a different implement on each one.

Regards,
Larry

Ed,

I bought it from the manufacture, who was in NC. He sold the tooling, etc. to a co. in Iowa. They made some but had problems selling them. Transportation costs were too high. So they are not being made anymore. :-(

It is the most useful implement I have - if I were forced to make such a choice. It is a rear scoop that has a trip dump. I'll put the link in to my Photopoint album on it. I've carried load after load of brush, tree limbs, old posts, gates, etc. with it to burn piles cleaning up the farm I bought. Hauled dirt up from my creek bottom for fill. One load was so heavy the front end on my 3000 came up and not wanting to stop I traveled some 100' that way before it came down. That is when I added my "front weight" - the head off a Chevy 6 cyl. pickumup truck engine. :-)

Regards,
Larry

If he doesn't like his 8N anymore than let it be. I think if he wants he can still give out good info. reflecting upon the "terrible times" of his 8N ownership. Don't blame him after all they are Ford's which stands for Fix-On-Repair-Daily.

Sounds like your describing me, Nolan. I'm a sucker for an old car that can be fixed. And i always see one i'd love to have. Problem is i've got so many of them, i'll never get'em all done. Ready for the list?

1968 plymouth barracuda
1953 dodge pick-up
1966 mercury comet caliente
1966 ford pick-up
1976 chevy nova
1978 datsun pick-up

Since i bought my 52 8N, i've had my eye on several old junkers out in fields. Guess i'll start on tractors now.

Wanta trade for a good used car?

While we are on the subject of stuff. I also have an IH school bus. (A160) I think. It has the 220 straight 6 engine from about 1956 and it sure does run good. 4 speed floor shift transmission and one ton rear end single speed.

If anybody knows of a pickup truck that I might be able to obtain I wish you would contact me. Or if any of you want a really good old engine and running gear I would sell the running gear. The bus is sorta stationary as our deer hunting lodge and has not been moved in about four years.

Friends at work refer to me as Fred Sanford at times. :-) I really could see myself running a junk yard, but I'd have a hard time parting with my "treasures".

Nolan, who owns:

2.5 Spitfires
0.5 GT6
1 Fiat
1 Toyota truck (with 1, maybe two more on the way)
1 Volvo (ok, it's my wifes, and it's the best of the bunch)
3 riding mowers that don't work
2 weed wackers that don't work
3 motorcycles that don't work about 20 broken chainsaws
2 push mowers that sometimes work
1 garden tiller that barely works
1 snow blower that sorta works
3 trailers that don't work

We won't talk about the really strange ones. Like why on earth I took home a 55 gallon drum of mystery soap. I don't know why I did that, but I'm sure it seemed reasonable at the time. I'm going to relinquish the broken vacuum cleaner collection. In a two bedroom house we really don't need six vacuum cleaners, of which only one really works. I don't have a swimming pool, so I'm not sure why I took home a swimming pool filter and pump...

Sigh, it *is* a sickness! :-)
