Valve adjustment: The screw on the tappet is harder to turn than I imagined - not impossible just about 3X the torque I expected (by feel). Does this sound normal - are they really tight to prevent self rotation (there would have to be some resistance)?

Also is this a right hand screw - CCW backs it out to reduce clearance between screw and valve stem cup.

Any idea what the thread sizw is - seams about 1/4 turn only reduce clearance about 0.002" - does this sound right.

Any tips welcome.

Thanks for the adviice.

One tappet I think is stripped - can't get the gap to tighten beyond .012" (ok for now - but leaves one to wonder about the condition). Seams hard to think it could be stipped.

Yes a right hand CCW screw and little turning makes a considerable change. I like to do as the Ford Flatheaders do, that is to drill a 3/16" holes in the side of the lifter barrels on the block about 3/4" down from the top. When I adjust lifters a pin is inserted thru the hole into the slot in the lifter to prevent it from turning. Makes adjustment quick and easy. The FFH users have done this for as long as I can remember.

A while back, I speculated in a reply to someone's post that they were either 5/16" or 3/8" NF, both of which are 24 TPI. I have been meaning to verify this when in the shop, but haven't remembered. I'll bet it's right on, or very close, though? And, yes, they're tough to turn.
