My amp meter jumps all over the place on pos side. Have new battery, new VR. Bat is charging fine. Could I need new brushes?

I'm thinking regulator too, but something often overlooked is BRUSH SPRINGS. What else keeps the brushes against the commutator? I replace them 100% in ford Generators

Head to the local ma and pa rebuilder, or if it's that far gone, the local NH dealer will have a quality reman generator on the shelf

I'm surprised this question doesn't get asked more often. I've seen a lot of this - even with a fresh generator and regulator. Dell is right on both counts. Have a look at the brushes and commutator in the generator. If they look pretty good, chances are that the regulator is kinda flakey. If that's the case, fergetaboutit. Consider yourself lucky that it's charging and enjoy life. It isn't going to hurt the generator or anything else. With the vibrating regulator system, the regulator has got to be a real peach to give you a steady needle. Most of them aren't. A guy could make a fortune if he could find or build a solid state regulator for these things. It would sure make for a lot less heartburn.

Once you rule out bad or loose connections.. bad brushes would be my next 'guess' ( baring a bad meter ).

Jim cox is the real genny guru here, and Dell is also 'da man' when it comes to these things... But I think you are on the right track... What do you get when you full field it?

Do you have a gauge from another tractor on hand to check it with?

Ron..... ..what sounder sez..... .but..... .
Don't rule out a BAD NEW voltage regulator. Been some reports of bad V/R's. Your V/R could have sticky points or bad relay bearing points. Unfortunately, most places have a NO RETURN on electrical stuff.

I'm gonnna assume you correctly "polarized" your new voltage regulator by "arc-sparkin" your v/r BATT and ARM side-by-side terminals.

Brushes are eazy to visually "inspect". Remove the endplate and lookie-look..... ...Dell

"Polarized" with the tractor turned off.

Ron..... ..on the 8N, when you touch the side-by-side BATT and ARM terminals together (I use a screwdriver blade) you will draw an arc-spark. That momentary connection is ALL you need to "polarize" your voltage regulator/generator to whatever your battery ground is. Remember the N's came from the factory with positive battery ground. And you can always re-polarize ennytime you feel the need..... ...Dell
