Over the winter I have done some major work on my Jubilee .....although I never had an overheating condition I did replaced the radiator ( it was in bad shape) , hoses, and recently a new thermostat etc.....I refilled the radiator with a mix of anti freeze that will protect me down to -20 deg.....I also changed the ignition to the Pertronix 6 volt breakerless and a new coil...checked the timing , both static and @1500 RPM and the tractor seems to run fine..... . However I notice that when I run the tractor (idling , not actually working it) for any length of tome I notice that the Temp Gauge will move up into the Red Zone and when the Thermostat opens up it will drop down to the Green and sit there for awhile and then creep back up to the Red and repeat this continuously ...I have drained the coolant and refilled with different % of mixes ( always testing with the ball float),checked /rechecked timimg and although I can effect the range at with it cycles it will always go into the Red Zone....Before I replaced the thermostat it did exactly the same thing .....I do not remember this last year although it might have done the same thing....I am concerned because the fresh coat of Red paint has turned darker on the engine then any other areas(hot enough to turn it darker ???).....I noticed that the Red paint applied to the exhaust manifold turned completely black....Question is ....is the cyling on the gauge normal(I believe so) and if so should it be cycling in the Red .....Should I chage the Termostat to a different range....Is it possible I have a bad Gauge....As usual any opinions greatly appreciated....Thaks...Alan

Back when I had problems with the NAA overheating I changed the radiator. Then I had the cycling heat problems like you describe. I checked the coolant level, and it was too low. Now that it has the right level I no longer have a problem. I do notice that the temp gauge will swing some, and it is more noticable at idle, but not at working speeds.

Did you hose out the block when you had it apart??? You might want to check that. Pull out the freeze plugs, the drain plug, the two radiator hoses, and put the garden hose to her. You might find some of your old radiator in the engine block.

Alan..... ...while the picture of the NAA engine mounted thermostat seems straight foward, I've known some engines that the thermostat can be installed BASSACKWARDS.

Heres what I'd do.....the cold finger test. First thing in cold morning remove radiator cap, then starter up. You should feel slightly warm water with your finger in the radiator neck water within 5 MINUTES. NO? you gotts thermostat installation problems. Yes? may still have thermostat cycling problem or most likely, yer heat indicator bulb gone bad. ($30 cheap)

Unless you "porcelanize" your exhaust manifold, exhaust heat is going to turn ANY paint BLACK. Some people don't fight it and paint their exhaust manifold BAR-B-QUE BLACK..... .Dell
