My 9N has recently developed a leak. It has a sherman tranny, When I run the engine either in or out of gear, Oil drips out of the front weep hole just under where the clutch would be. At first, I thought it might be engine oil but now I believe it is transmission oil. I am wondering where this leak could be, if it was the front tranny seal, wouldnt it come out the rear hole. I dont think it is the sherman because it would be empty by now. So I am wondering how the oil could come forward a foot to the front hole. I have had no big problems with the clutch except having to block it up when not in use. Am I looking at a tractor split? Thanks, Joe

The others are right. Probably the input shaft seal in the Sherman. If it were me, I'd get it fixed. If you have an understanding of the inner workings of this arrangement, you can see that when this seal leaks, it pukes directly onto the clutch disc. It's a pay me now or pay me later type thing. Splitting the tractor is not really the day long monster job that most think it is. I split one this weekend for a new throw out bearing. I had it split in exactly an hour from turning off the key. No special tools except a pickle fork for the tie rod ends and a couple good floor jacks. I didn't even bother to get the ratchet out.

Joe..... ..what John sez..... ..and..... ..
The tranny input seal ($3 cheap) is inside the 12"? long tranny input shaft carrier which dribbles leaky oilseal out the end of carrier over the front tranny drain hole. Just as long as yer clutch doesn't gitt oil onnna it, yer probably ok. (as long as you "block" yer clutch pedal down so it doesn't stick) And yes, replacement is by "splittin" yer tractor.

Some people the dribbles bother'em so much they bailing wire a tunafish can under the leaker to catch the dribbles.

N.B.#1.....the sherman uses the same front tranny seal as the main tranny
N.B.#2.....the main tranny has an "oil slinger" that continually pumps the Sherman full of oil during operation. That is why and how your Sherman operates..... ...Dell

Most likely it is the tranny seal. Depending on how bad the leak is, might consider splitting the tractor and put in new seal, or, simply park over an empty oyster can.
