I was able to use my 49 8N a little this past weekend to tighten up some fence post corners. It is still a joy to drive and use after owning it for over 27 years.

I haven’t had to work on it much since I did a fairly major rebuild and restoration about three or four years ago. I guess I probably miss tinkering with it.

Someone over on the Ford board asked if these old tractors could be reliable on a regular basis without working on it every time you use it. I say the answer is yes if you fix it up good to start with.

Best regards to all.

I own a 52 8N that my father bought around 1970 or so from the estate of the original owner. It still works on my place which is only about 4 miles from where it was bought new. With the exception of one major engine rebuild (made necessary because of an upset family member who dumped sand into the crankcase! talk about engine abuse!) it has been worked fairly hard with little in the way of maintenance, yet starts reliably and does what is asked of it. It is in need of some work now, which I plan on in the not so distant future. Over 50 years of use has left the brakes almost non-existent, minor leaks, a fender loose, headlights non-working..... and so forth. The great thing is a weekend or two would fix most everything wrong with it, and give it a good 50/50 paint job (50/50 paint job looks good at 50 feet away or 50 MPH). Now, just getting around to it.

It was not a pretty sight. The 8N started smoking prufusely suddenly, and dad suspected foul play because of an upset member of the family, and drained the crankcase and found sand in the oil. The crazy part is we flushed the crankcase and used the smoking 8N for a few years until Dad had it gone through.

I'd depend more on these old tractor to stay running then most of them new tractors they sell now. I have 6 tractors that I use and all of them only need a little TLC once in a while but have always do what I have asked them to. One of them is a 1935 JD-B

"could be reliable on a regular basis"...I might not start my tired 2N for months at a time, depending upon season/other comitiments(read honey-dos). Knock wood, its always started and did what I've asked. FWIW...don t. ...
