Advice for steering bearing replacement

I have a '48 8N with the older-style steering box. I need to replace the upper & lower steering worm shaft bearings. I have seen replacements for sale that are made from an "Industrial Plastic" material. Are these okay to use or should I try to find an original-type metal bearing set? Does anyone know a bearing number I could use to go to a local auto parts store to buy one? Another question, I did something I shouldn't- I dissambled the gearbox without marking the postion of the steering gears. Is there an easy method to re-align them? TIA

Turn your steering wheel all the way in one direction. Turn your steering wheel in the other direction--count your turns. Divide that by two and turn your wheel back the other way that many turns. point your front tires straight ahead. Then insert your sector gears so they are pointing down where the radius rods can be attached. Very easy to do, it worked for me.

For gear alignment.. don't worry.. you aren't in trouble.. Grab your fo-4 and find the right section for the early 8n box.. there is good information there.. including how to allign the sector gears back up. No rocket science involved.. just a greasy hands.. )

Rich..... ...find METAL bearings. The "plastic bearings" can't handle the side-torque caused by the steering ball-nut going up and down the shaft.

Unfortunately I don't have bearing mfg cross-references. N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) lists:
p/n 8n-3505, kit, steering gear bearing (consists of:)
p/n 8N-3571, bearing cage, steering gear worm thrust roller
p/n 8N-3552, cup, steering gear worm thrust bearing, 1.7520" O.D. x 1,324" I.D. x 0.380
HTH..... ...Dell
