I recently bought an 8N and am unsure of the year. The engine serial number is "9N171952", there is a casting date on the rear axle housing of 2-22-48. I'm also wondering if the engine isn't original being that the s/n starts with "9Nxxx---, not that is matters a whole lot, I would just like to know what I have if/when I need parts. Anyone able to enlighten me?

Norm..... ...congratulations, you have the "braggin' rights" to a 1945 2N ENGINE. All 2N engines s/n start with 9N....There is no physical difference between a 1945 2N engine and a 1948 8N engine and are interchangeable. They BOTH have a squarecan ignition coil frontmount distributor that uses the "infamous ballast resistor" mounted on the backside of the dash panel under the ammeter. The 8N engine s/n starts with 8N and has a 3-wire genny with a 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator. HINT: ALL 8N's have a 4-speed tranny, all 2N's have a 3-speed tranny..... .....Dell

More than likely a '48 8N with an earlier 9N/2N engine transplant. Those axle housing dates are a real good indicator in my opinion as you'd destroy the tractor before you'd break or ruin one of those and have to replace it. Check out the tractor year I.D. pages at www.8nford.com to look for specific equipment on the tractor to verify this.
