I was just reading the post below about converting our N starters to 12 volt. I have the luxury of a top notch starter generator shop in a near by town. He has converted a half a dozen generators for me, on everything from Fords, to Farmalls, to air compressors. Whenever I mention a customer wanting the starter converted, his question is WHY?? When I answer "cosmetics" he just shakes his head, and asks who's gonna look inside? He will gladly convert a starter for anyone, doesn't argue with the "townies" but fights with the farmers around here, tooth and nail. Why slow down a good system, with a slower starter????
Ahhh well, what I wanted to say is I converted a farmall A for a neighbor 21 years ago, I converted my super A 15 years ago. I did not convert the starter, and neither one has had one bit of starter problem to date. As to the question of a complete 12 volt conversion, I'd have to wonder if a true conversion would include changing the wiring, and connectors, to reflect the change in load? That is truley one of the stranges arguments that I've ever heard in the 6v-12v discussion. Later
Ron

I converted my 861 to 12V many years ago. Starter is unchanged 6V and has worked fine for a long time. Starter current on 6 or 12 is so high that it doesn't know the difference. You can melt one down with either (6V or 12V) up by staying on it too long! My 8N still has original 6V everything and works fine as well.

I agree Ron. Some folks just think about things too much.

Why bother. I would not spend the time and money
just to put in smaller wires because of the reduced amperage load. The large six volt wires
should work just fine.

Roger.

Which was my point exactly. I was using the same thought line as I read re: 12 starter.
