Non adjustment valves

Ok so I tried to adjust my valves (48N) but to no avial I think the tappets are not adjustable.

Tappets have a screw head coming out of them - sounds good so far. But when turning the screws at least 1/2 turn it didn't make a bit of difference (intake at 0.015" before and after turning). This was the case for 2 intake and 1 exhaust valve. Screw heads(that's what I'll call them for now) were tough to turn - probably in the neiberhood of 15 to 20 ft-lbs (just guessing).

So why would the tappets have screw heads - a pressed in pin for a hardened surface?

Any ideas - this has got me baffled?

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for the info.

I understand the restrain of the tappet is necessary. I made a custom tool to hold it. It took about 20 ft lbs to turn the HEX head coming out of the tappet.

But this is the problem - despite 1/2 revolution of the HEX head (tappet not rotating) no clearance change.

Did the non adjust tappets have a HEX head on the top of the tappet that could be turned (but had no threads)?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul you need the Johnson Tappet wrenches to hold the tappets from turning. If you need a set let me know I have them in stock. Later Tractor Rod

Paul -- If your tappets have the threaded adjustable bolt in the top as you indicated then you must hold the tappet, keeping it from turning while screwing the threaded portion up or down to adjust the clearance. And yes, the threads are a tight "interference fit". This job can be done just by pulling the manifolds and valve covers. However if you have the earlier, non-adjustable type of tappets you must pull the head as well in order to get the valves out of the engine because the clearances in this case are adjusted by grinding the end of valve stem to increase the clearance or by grinding the valve face or the valve seat in order to seat the valve further down in the block and thereby reducing the clearance between the tappet and the end of the valve stem. You may have to look around a bit to find a mechanic that still knows how to do this. (if you don't have the tools to do it yourself).

Paul, it takes special wrenches to adjust the ford adjustable tappet, available from a ford/NH dealer. This wrench holds the tappet while you turn the bolt in the top for adjustment. BUT, your tractor could have the button head tappets in it and these are not adjustable. People have ground the stem on these down if the valve clearance is to tight, but there's no way to build them up for lose valves. And I would only consider adjustments this way if the motor was disassembled. John
